January Book Discussion

The Book Discussion Group will be meeting on Jan. 15th at 2 p.m. to share thoughts on a book about a Nebraska native from Superior-Evelene Brodstone. The book is titled “Evelene: The Troubleshooter Was a Lady” by Elizabeth J. Tremain.

Evelene was one of the world’s highest paid woman executives in the 1920’s. She was raised in Superior, Nebraska, and never forgot her home when her work took her to many places around the world. She was even a childhood friend to Nebraska author, Willa Cather. In the book, you will follow her rise through the ranks of the Vestey Cold Storage Company in Chicago, London, and other countries. Evelene eventually marries Lord William Vestey and becomes Lady Vestey.

The author was the little neighbor girl to Evelene in Superior and they kept in contact with each other until Evelene’s death in 1941. This biography is part autobiography as many entries are from Evelene’s diaries and letters. You are there when she describes Queen Victoria’s London, a London under siege during the war, and the years between.
