Looking for Photographs of Brown County

The Ainsworth Public Library is looking for Brown County photographs to be published on note cards which will be sold to raise money for the library. We have three categories:

Brown County Historical/Sandhill Scenery in color

Brown County Historical/Sandhill Scenery in black & white

Brown County Education through the years in black & white or color

One entry per person per category. No age restrictions and no fee to enter. Entries due June 10th to aplibrary@threeriver.net.

The Ainsworth Library Foundation Board will select the winning photographs to be placed on the note cards. Please note that the Library will own the copyrights of the prints selected for publication. Ainsworth Library Foundation Planning a Fundraiser

The Ainsworth Library Foundation Board held a meeting on May 19, 2021 at the Ainsworth Public Library.  President Marsha Fuchs called the meeting to order at 5 p.m.   Roll call showed six members present. They included Wendy Allen, Marsha Fuchs, Traci Ganser, Phyllis Leach, Teri Soles, and Deanna Taylor.   One member, Bill Lentz, was absent.  Gail Irwin, Library Director, was also present for the meeting.

Traci G. moved to approve the minutes. Deanna T. seconded this with all voting in favor of.  The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Wendy A.  Teri S. made the motion to approve the report. Traci G. seconded this with all members voting in favor of.  A report was given on the income and expenses for the 2020 fiscal year.  Treasurer Wendy also stated that the Income Tax Forms have been submitted.  There was only one bill presented for payment to Amazon for two books purchased as memorial gifts.  Phyllis L. made the motion to approve this bill for payment.  Deanna T. seconded this with all members voting in favor of.  The Gift Transaction List from February to May 2021 was shared.  It noted receiving gifts in memory of Mrs. LaPreil Walton, Mrs. Gloria Randell, and Mr. Rollie Beran. 

The landscaping project was discussed.  It was noted that the soaker system will be installed soon.  Plant replacement was discussed.  Wendy A. made the motion to approve the purchase of plants to replace the winter kill plants.  Traci G. seconded this with all members voting in favor of.

Discussion was held on the Freda Hinrich Memorial.  Deanna T. is checking on solar light poles for in front of the library.

A Book Signing for local author, Katie Nelson Rau, will be held on May 25th from 3-6 p.m.  Wendy A. and Teri S. volunteered to bring cookies to serve.

It was noted that a Magic Show would be held on June 14th at 4 p.m.  This is free and open to all ages.

Summer Reading Program will be held the month of June.  Fun-Hours will be held for the Preschool to 4th grade on Tuesday and Thursday in June.  The K-4th Grade group will keep track of time read/book titles on the online program of Reader Zone.   A stem/steam programs will be held in July for the Middle School students as well as a movie afternoon once a week.

The Photo Note Card Fundraiser was discussed.  There will be three categories for people to submit  photo’s in:

1.         Brown County Education through the years (color or black/white)

2.         Black & White Historical Sandhill Scene

3.         Colored Historical Sandhill Scenery

No age restrictions. One entry per person per category.  No fee to enter.  Library will own the copyrights of photos.  Board will decide on final winners.  Winners will be placed on note cards to sell.  Promotional work will be done. It is hoped that the sales will begin on June 25th.

 The next meeting date was set for August 18th at 5 p.m.   Since there was no further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 5:50 p.m.

Book Signing for Local Author

Local author, Katie Nelson Rau, will be at the Ainsworth Public Library on May 25th from 3 – 6 p.m. with her new children’s title of “The Best Discovery”. Mrs. Rau will be available to sell and sign her new book at this time. A drawing will be held for a free copy of the book so make sure to put your name in for the drawing. Refreshments will be served!

Minutes of May Board Meeting

The Ainsworth Library Board held their monthly meeting on May 5, 2021 at the Ainsworth Public Library.  This meeting was advertised in the local newspaper, over the radio, at the Library as well as on the library’s website and Facebook page.  President Phyllis Leach called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m.  Notice was given on the posting of the Nebraska Open Meeting Act.  Roll call showed three members present:  Todd Flynn, Stacey Gilliland, and Phyllis Leach.  Members Luke Hitchcock and Alane Lentz were absent.  Library Director, Gail Irwin, was also present for the meeting.

Stacey Gilliland made the motion to approve the minutes of the last meeting.  Todd Flynn seconded this with all members voting in favor of.  Todd Flynn moved to approve the claims for payment.  Stacey Gilliland seconded this with all members voting in favor of.  The Monthly Library Report for April was presented.  It was noted that several business men have looked at the area needing repair work done and will present a bid/estimate.  List of titles purchased was shared with the Board.

An update was given on the Book Club.  The April meeting was the last discussion until the group restarts in September.

A review was given on Covid-19 restrictions at the library.  Starting May 17th, the library will open up both restrooms, have people return items inside the building instead of using the outside Book Return, and move the two computers from the meeting room back to their regular area.   We will still ask people to use hand sanitizer in the front entry.  Masks are recommended but it is up to the person if they wear a mask or not.  We will still social distance as much as we can.  The Board decided to wait until June on the decision to open up more hours or not.

The Summer Reading Program was discussed.  A flier that went home with students at the school was shared with the Board.  Sign up will run from May 1st to May 15th.  They may register with the form on the website or the library’s Facebook page.  We will also sign children up at the library.  We will be using the Reader Zone program for the grade school students to keep track of time read and titles of books from June 1st to June 30th.  Prizes will be handed out after July 1st.  The Atkinson Library will have a Magic Show on July 14th    in the morning.  Jeff Quinn has contacted our library about scheduling a show in the afternoon.   After a discussion, the Board told director to contact the presenter and see if he was still available.

Katie Rau is scheduled for a Book Signing on May 25th from 3-6 p.m. with her book The Best Discovery.   It was illustrated by local artist, Shelly Strand.   Promotional work will be done for this event in the near future. 

It was noted that the Library had several displays at the library during April.  We had a display from the Bright Horizon on abuse.  The Ainsworth Art Guild held their Annual Spring Art Show from April 16th to May 1st

The proposed budget for 2021 to 2022 was worked on.   We have one line item to add yet on building maintenance.  We are waiting for several bids/estimates on some repair work that we need done.  We will complete the budget request at the June meeting.

The letter on our State Aid for fiscal year 2021 was shared with the Board.  We will receive a total of $1,238.  The award was determined using the following formula:

            Base amount:  $565

            Per Capita Pay:  $163

            Accreditation Bonus: $400

            1% Incentive Pay:  $110

A review was given on the various meetings/workshop attended by staff.  This included the Thursday Director’s Zoom Meeting on April 1st, 15th, 22nd, and 29th; the Book Repair On-Line Workshop; and the Reader Zone On-Line class. 

Under correspondence, a thank you note was shared from the American Legion Auxiliary on the library letting them do a zoom meeting of the District 1 Meeting on April 10th.  A letter from the White House was shared on thanking the library for thoughts about the infrastructure policy. A letter was shared from Nebraska OverDrive group on using funds from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 for adding videos to the Nebraska collection.  The Nebraska Historical Society sent a letter with information on digitization of newspapers.  They will be partnering  with Newspapers.com to scan their newspaper for free.  In exchange, they have agreed to allow this company to have the ability to make scans available on their website for the next three years.  After that, the images will be given to the State Historical Society so they can make them searchable on their website for free.  The Historical Society will no longer provide shipping runs of microfilmed newspapers to outside vendors for digitization.

The next meeting date and time was set for June 2nd at 5 p.m.   Since there was further business to come before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 5:48 p.m.

Summer Reading Program Planned at Local Library

Area children are invited to join the Tails about Tales Summer Reading Program at the Ainsworth Public Library during the month of June.  We have lots of fun planned for the children Preschool to 4th grade.  Please note that due to Covid-19, we will not be holding a Toddler Time this year.

The sign-up period will be from May 1st till May 15th   by way of a survey on our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Ainsworthlibrary) and on the library’s website (libraries.ne.gov/ainsworth), or in person at the Library   We will go by the grade just completed in the school year of 2020-2021.

The Preschool Summer Story Hour will be for the children aged four and five (that have not yet been in Kindergarten).  They will meet from 1-1:45 p.m. on June 1st, June 8th, June 15th, and June 22nd.  This group will not be keeping track of reading time.

In the Reading Program for the Kindergarten to Fourth Grade group, students will keep tract of the number of minutes/hours spent reading from June 1st to June 30th   by way of the Reader Zone On-Line Program.  You will need to sign up with the Reader Zone app and the code that is assigned to our library (4a00f).  You may access Reader Zone by way of smart phone, tablet, or computer.  Prizes will be handed out to readers that qualify for prizes after July 1st.

The Fun-Hour for the grade school students will be held on Tuesday and Thursdays in June. Kindergarten and First Grade students will meet on Tuesdays (June 1st, June 8th, June 15th, and June 22nd.  Kindergarten will be at the Library from 2-2:45 p.m. and the First Graders from 3-3:45 p.m.  The Second, Third, and Fourth Grade Fun-Hour will be held from Thursday (June 3rd, June 10th, June 17th, and June 24rd).  Second Grade will be at the Library 1-1:45 p.m.; Third Grade from 2-2:45 p.m. and the Fourth Grade from 3-3:45 p.m.

Plans are being made for Middle School students to engage in some Maker Space Activities in July.  Be watching for more information on this as July gets closer.
