Historical Presentation!
Wednesday, September 4, 2013, Charlotte M. Endorf will be speaking at The Bunkhouse at noon. Please come and enjoy a historical presentation about the Orphan Train, sponsored by Arthur County Library.
In 2004, Charlotte M. Endorf made the decision to document the real-life stores of the children who rode the Orphan Trains between the years 1854 to 1929. A Nebraska author, she created After the Rain, Oh the Beautiful Rainbow, Plains Bound: Fragile Cargo, By the Train They Came series, Unsung Neighbors, They Call Me Teddy and Trains of Promise. Sponsored by the Madison County Museum, she condensed ten hours of videos into a professional manner producing the DVD Ordinary Orphan Train Riders Who Became Extraordinary Friends. She traveled to NYC opening records dating back to 1917 with Lela, Then compiling a poetry CD with her called Hidden Treasures. Sit back and be entertained as you learn more about this little known American history as she presents to you Fragile Excess Baggage.

Summer Reading Contest

The winners of the Summer Reading program were as follows: in the pre-k to 2nd grade category, Laynne Ohm won with 860 pgs. read, in the 3rd to 5th grade category, Emma Ohm won with 1434 pgs. read, and in the 6th to 8th grade category, Dawson Helmer won with 4088 pgs. read. Thanks to all the kids for participating.

The last day you can bring in pages read, for the reading contest, will be the 12th of July (this Friday!). The water-day party will start at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 15th. We’ll find out the summer reading winners and have games for all ages to enjoy.

Summer Reading Contest

The summer reading contest is starting again. Kids can start bringing in their pages read at any time. You can count the pages you’ve been reading since the beginning of summer. I just need a parents signature with the pages read. There will be three categories: pre-K-2th, 3th-5th, and 6th-8th. If teenagers older than 8th grade are interesting in a reading contest, just let me know. The last day you can bring in pages read will be the 12th of July. The 15th of July I’ll announce the winners, give out prizes, and have water games for all ages to enjoy.

New books on CD

We have a couple new books on CD: “No Rest For the Dead”, “Capitol Murder” by Phillip Margolin, “Mistress of the Game” by Tilly Bagshawe and Sidney Sheldon, “Every Breath You Take” by Gilroy, and “Back Fire” by Catherine Coulter. These were all donated by Brenda Cullinan.

Library Upgrade

Please excuse the mess in the library. The children’s section is getting an upgrade thanks to our wonderful art students and teacher. 🙂 The most exciting part is the mural they plan on painting on the library wall. Again, please excuse the mess. Thanks!

Overdrive

Arthur Library has recently joined the Overdrive group. For those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s a way for you to check out book electronically via e-reader (kindle, ipad, etc.) for free. For those of you who are already implementing it, I hope you are enjoying the program. If you have any questions at all, I’m very happy to try and figure out the answer for you.
