Reading Program Ends

What have you been doing this summer? Aside from all the yard work, ball games and vacations, the Atkinson Public Library hopes you have included some time for reading. People of all ages have been checking out books throughout the summer, and filling out reading slips to participate in the Summer Reading Program.

This year, 87 preschool through third graders read (or someone read to them) 3,180 books! Once they recorded 15 book titles, they could pick a prize from the treasure chest, and put a superhero burst on the wall with their name on it. The wall filled up really fast!

129 library patrons read, and recorded, a total of 4,120 books during the program!

In the Grade 4 through 12 division, there were 18 participants who read six books in their reading level and completed reading slips, earning them a chance to win Atkinson Bucks! If they chose to, they could read two extra books, and get an additional chance in the drawing. At the end of the reading program, 288 books had been read!

There were 24 participants in the Adult division, who also read six (or eight) books for chances in the drawing for Atkinson Bucks. In all, this group read 652 books throughout the summer!

The Summer Reading Program ended August 1st and everyone that participated, by reading books during the summer and filling out the reading slips, was invited to a pizza party at the library on Monday, August 3rd. There were 72 children and adults that attended and enjoyed pizza, grapes, cookies, and a drink.

After everyone had gotten their fill of pizza, it was time for the drawings! In the adult drawings for Atkinson Bucks, Beth Prussa won $25, and Kenneth Mlinar, Dorothy Kubart, and Brad Slaymaker each won $10! And in the Grade 4 -12 drawings for Atkinson Bucks, Brianna Rentschler won $25, Micah Davis and Madison Ruda each won $10.

There were many other chances to win prizes at the party – but for these, you had to be there to win! Names of preschool through third grade participants were drawn to receive items in the Summer Reading treasure chest. There were also drawings for miscellaneous items for the Grade 4-12, and Adult participants.

Don’t forget to keep reading! The Golden Sower Nominees have been announced and the library has copies of all of the books nominated, in all three age groups. A large selection of books has just arrived, and there’s always a lot to choose from, so stop by and check out what’s new at your library!
