Have a Great Weekend!

Summer Reading Program Ends

Today was the last day of the Summer Reading Program! It has been a long two months, but I think overall everyone had a good time. This week we learned about Law Enforcement Officers and how they help people everyday. We read a silly book called Officer Buckle and Gloria, and then the kids were fingerprinted. There were about 4 helpers and 11 kids. Probably our slowest week, but I know the closer we get to school starting, the busier everyone gets. Thank you to everyone who helped out these last two months, and look forward to getting back into the groove of things again.

Summer Reading Fun!

Our fireman guest shows the kids the fire engine!

Our fireman guest shows the kids the fire engine!

Good afternoon! Today our Summer Reading Program was a little different. Today’s hero was Firefighters. We read a book about firefighters, and had a snack of “hot” candy. We also had a special guest! Today’s guest was Shane Smith of the McCook Fire Department. He gave a talk about fire safety and then showed the kids all the cool things on the fire truck that he brought all the way from McCook! We had about 16 kids today, and four helpers. We learned a lot about what firefighters do everyday.

Summer Reading Program

The last couple of weeks were again crazy here at the library, but things are slowing a bit (I hope!), so I have a bit of time to update on our Summer Reading Program. Last week, we learned about our first President, George Washington. We read about what his life would have been like before we were a country. We also finger-painted! (yes, I’m a glutton for punishment) our own cherry trees.

This week, we went along on the Lewis and Clark expedition with Sacagawea. We learned about her early life, how she traveled 4,000 miles with a new baby, and how she helped to men make it safely to the ocean. We also learned how to track animals just as Sacagawea would have done.

Next week, we will have members of the McCook Fire and Rescue Department come and talk to us as we learn about what firefighters do. Hopefully, they will bring a truck for us to look at, too.

Summer Reading Update

Things have gotten a bit busy here at the library, so let me apologize for not updating more frequently. I was also gone last week, enjoying some time with family and thus, got more behind. Now that that is out of the way, lets get on with it.

The last few weeks of Summer Reading Program have been really great. After Anne Frank, we stayed in the past and learned about Helen Keller. She really is a great heroine, as she did a lot with her life, despite her handicaps.  We learned how to write our names in Braille, and found out that is more complicated than you think it is.

Last week, we celebrated military heroes.  The family I was spending time with was my younger brother, Bart. He is a Staff Sargent in the US Air Force. He is an aircraft maintainer on C-17.  He came to the library with me and gave a little talk to the kids about the cool places he has been (Antarctica! New Zealand!) and some things he has seen. He also talked about what life in the military was like. I think the kids were a bit disappointed that he wasn’t in combat situations. In his words, “I carry a toolbox, not a gun.”

This week, we learned about Abraham Lincoln. We read a book about what life was like when Lincoln was growing up, and then we made our own “log” cabins! (They were really popsicle sticks). We have been averaging about 20 kids a week, which is really great.

Week one of Summer Fun

We had a great turnout for the first week of the Summer Reading Program! About 20 kids, as well as some moms and babies, showed up and learned about astronauts. We read the book Mousetronaut by Mark Kelly, and then we made a cool craft. The kids checked out  a lot of books, so the reading program is a success so far! Some of them even got their own library cards! I am excited about how well it is going so far, so I am looking forward to the next few weeks to see if we continue to do well.

I also have bought some new movies. Our new titles this week:

McFarland USA

Jupiter Ascending

Still Alice

Selma

Book of Life

Paddington

SpongeBob Squarepants

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I also have American Sniper and Fury. These two movies are rated R and can only be checked out by someone over 17. If you are under 17, you need a parent or guardian present to rent this movie.

Have a great weekend!

New Books!

Wow, the weather has been crazy lately, hasn’t it? Welcome to May in Nebraska, right? I have to travel this weekend, I hope things calm down a bit.  I don’t get out much, so I hope I am able to enjoy my trip!
