The 2016 Summer Reading Program ‘On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!’ concluded Tuesday with a scavenger hunt, hot dogs and prizes.
Weekly reading logs reported a total of 151 hours 15 minutes read during the program!
Thank you to all volunteers who helped make the program a success and to all parents and caretakers for making reading a priority!
Kids who participated in the summer reading program had the opportunity to do a fun art project, led by Carrie Soucie, a 4H leader from Upland, Nebraska. The activity was held at the Franklin Public Library on June 17 for kids who had participated in 4H throughout the summer. Soucie led nine kids in a fun art project that allowed them to make their own canvas tote bag for books. Soucie said the goal was to give kids a way to protect their library books and avoid losing them. The kids used stencils, permanent sharpies, and rubbing alcohol to make colorful, tie dye looking bags of their own. The kids used the sharpies and stencils to spell “books” on their bags and draw colorful decorations.
There were some creative minds at work. Some of the decorations included a superhero, chickens, an alien, horses, and an emoji. Soucie has 26 years of experience as a 4H leader and loves doing crafts with kids. The kids also enjoyed a fruit pizza made by Katrina Christiancy. Part of the goal of this year’s Summer Reading Program was exposing kids to healthy food choices. The colorful pizza included kiwi, blueberries, and strawberries. Many of the kids enjoyed trying a new kind of fruit. The kids who participated enjoyed creating their own designs and went home with a colorful bag for storing their library books in.
