reading someplace

Hooper Public Library welcomed Henry Doorly Zoo to Hooper on June 6th. They presented ZOOLYMPICS to help kick off Hooper Public Library’s summer reading program. Children were able to test their abilities against that of some animals and learned new facts about a few of their favorite animals.
The summer reading program titled ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, READ! continued at the library the rest of the week with Preschoolers coming on Tuesday morning for story time and fun activities. The older children came for afternoon sessions all week learning about the library & why it is important to keep reading throughout the summer. Each day had a different theme: STORY DAY, GAME DAY, CRAFT DAY & ACTIVITY DAY. Children heard stories about camping and made S’mores snack mix that everyone enjoyed. Games like Hangman, Book Sandwich, & Mad Libs were a big hit. They made “watermelon fans” to cool themselves with on these hot summer days, a READ paper chain to decorate the library with, cute magnets to take home and the preschoolers made a 3-D camping picture. Children played library games and learned how books are shelved in the library. They were also introduced to Nebraska Overdrive and learned how to check out a book on an I PAD. The last day was full of fun activities that got the children up and moving. They played with punch balls, had pull back car races, and tried out some bouncing putty, all of which they got to take home with them. Everyone also received a READ bag, bookmarks and a “playbook” with fun activity ideas to do the rest of the summer.
Children who are reading on their own were offered the chance to take part in our BOOK CAMP going on the rest of the summer. This is open to all Hooper Public Library patrons so bring your child in to see how he or she can earn prizes for reading this summer!

Sign up for Summer Reading Program

Our kickoff event will be held June 6th at 1:00p.m. at Hooper Auditorium. Zookeepers from Henry Doorly Zoo will be bringing us ZOOLYMPICS. This program redefines “active learning” as kids test themselves against the abilities of their favorite animals. Audiences will be inspired to learn more about animals and conservation and to continue training for the next ZOOLYMPICS!
We do hope you will join us at the library June 7th-10th for more active learning and reading fun but be sure to attend this free event even if you are not planning to attend our SRP the rest of the week.

Color Me Happy Preschool Tours

This week I had the pleasure of giving tours to Color Me Happy Preschool classes on Wed. & Fri. The children learned about checking out and returning books, heard fun stories, played in our puppet theater and were given a book, bookmark and a little treat to take home in their “I Love Books” bags. The highlight of the tour is always trying out the book drop!

Hooper Public Library recently received a memorial grant in the amount of $1250.00 from the family of Nova Tillman. Her son, Kevin Boatright recently contacted Cherie Anderson at HPL about possibly donating to the library and asked what funds might be used for. It was decided to put a bench in front of the library as well as add some new materials to the collection. The bench will have a plaque “In Memory of Nova Tillman” and any books added will have bookplates with her name as well. Nova was born in Hooper in 1926 and loved her hometown. These are wonderful gifts to share with the community.
In addition to that exciting news Hooper Public Library is gearing up for their annual bake sale & used book sale coming up in April during National Library Week (10th-16th). If you have gently used books or DVD movies you’d like to donate please bring them to Hooper Public Library by April 10th. **VHS tapes, textbooks or encyclopedias cannot be accepted** This annual sale benefits the summer reading program and other children’s programs. If you would like to donate baked goods for the bake sale or make a free will donation please contact Cherie Anderson at 654-3833 for more details.
