Director Retirement

Beth Foulks will be retiring from her library positions at both Ponca Public School and Ponca Carnegie Library in May. She has served as director at the public library for sixteen years and as the media specialist at the school library for eleven years.  She has served on the boards of Northeast Library System and Three Rivers Library System.  Beth says she thoroughly enjoyed her work in both libraries, getting acquainted with other librarians, and learning about libraries at classes, conferences and workshops.  She feels privileged to have been involved with the 2006 expansion/renovation project at Ponca Carngie Library and the set-up of the school library in the 2011 Ponca  School expansion/remodel project.  She looks forward to having more time available for her family, especially her 101 year-old mother and her twin 2-year old grandchildren.

Dr. Seuss Birthday Bash

Thursday, March 23, was the day Ponca children celebrated the birthday of Dr. Seuss at the Ponca Carnegie Library. The event, chaired by Melissa Ruhrer, attracted children and their parents to an evening of educational and fun activities, as well as good food.

According to Ruhrer, “We could not have sponsored this event without the tremendous support of many volunteers.” Volunteers included members of the Ponca High School National Honor Society, who performed a skit and led multiple fun and educational activities for the children.  Members of Friends of the Library wore festive red shirts and served food, which included pizzas from Cook’s Country Store and a birthday cake decorated by Paula Larson.

This year’s “Cat in the Hat,” Nate Ruhrer, led the children in a trivia game about Dr. Seuss. Trinity Greer served as an excellent “Thing One” and was an overall help to the children.

Library director, Beth Foulks, noted, “Face painting is always popular with the children, but this year the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) activities attracted a lot of attention. Even the older kids spent time engineering towers of plastic cups that impressed all the guests.”

The Art of Racing in the Rain

Ponca, NE – Friends of the Library will host a discussion of Garth Stein’s “The Art of Racing in the Rain” on Thursday, March 2, at 7:00 pm at the Ponca Carnegie Library.

Lynn Kerrigan will be the leader of the discussion of the whimsical, sad and funny look into the life of Enzo, a dog who desires to become a man. According to Kerrigan, “Being an avid dog lover, I appreciate that the book brings to life all the quirkiness that a dog’s life might be if I could sneak a peek into his life.”

The author, Garth Stein, explains, “Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver. Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn’t simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life’s ordeals.”

Everyone is invited to the discussion and it is not necessary to have read the book. More information is available at the Ponca Carnegie Library.
