One Book One Nebraska Selections

One nonfiction book and two novels—all stories with ties to Nebraska and the Great Plains—are the finalists for the 2014 One Book One Nebraska statewide reading program. The finalists are “Goodnight, Nebraska” by Tom McNeal, Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen by Bob Greene and Plainsong by Kent Haruf.

The One Book One Nebraska reading program, now in its tenth year, is sponsored by the Nebraska Center for the Book, Humanities Nebraska, Nebraska Library Commission, and Nebraska Library Association. It encourages Nebraskans across the state to read and discuss the same book, chosen from books written by Nebraska authors or that have a Nebraska theme or setting. A committee of the Nebraska Center for the Book selected the three finalists from a list of 71 titles nominated by 141 Nebraskans.

The choice for the 2014 One Book One Nebraska will be announced at 5:30 p.m. at the Celebration of Nebraska Books on October 26 at the Nebraska State Historical Society’s Museum of Nebraska History, 15th and P Streets in downtown Lincoln. The event will also recognize the Willa Cather Foundation for their promotional efforts celebrating the 100th anniversary of the publication of the 2013 One Book One Nebraska book selection O Pioneers! by Willa Cather. For more information about One Book One Nebraska, see http://onebook.nebraska.gov/2013/index.aspx.

Library Granted Funding

The Rock County Public Library received funding designated for a new automated circulation system from remaining Q125 funds administered by the Bassett Foundation, Inc. The new software and converted database was received the first week in August.  To keep expense of the transfer to a minimum, staff transferred the patron and current circulation of materials in house.

The new system went live on September 3rd.  You can once again access the online catalog at http://libraries.ne.gov/rockcounty by clicking on Catalog.  Log in using your library card number as your user ID and your last name as your password.  If you don’t know your card number, stop by or call 402-684-3800.  Searches can be done using the simple, advanced or by study program options.  When a title is found, click on details if you want more information.  On the right of the screen you can clearly see if a title is in or checked out. If you want a title that is checked out held for you when it comes in, you can place a hold on it. Reservations on titles are used only if you might want an item on a later specific date.

Disney Digital Books Have Arrived at Rock County Public Library

Rock County Public Library has expanded its digital collection with the addition of Disney Digital Books at http://libraries.ne.gov/rockcounty.  This new collection features nearly 700 Disney Online Books and  downloadable EPUB and PDF eBooks.

The Disney Online Books are browser based and can be enjoyed on a Windows or Mac computer. Titles offer interactive features to enhance the user experience such as a ‘magic pen’ that pronounces words with just one click, and the ability to look up word definitions. Users will recognize familiar Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, Disney Princesses, Hanna Montana, and more.

Users can browse, check out, and enjoy titles on their computer. Disney EPUB eBooks, along with the rest of the eBook collection, can be downloaded to a computer, plus transferred to a compatible eBook reader such as the Barnes & Noble Nook or Sony Reader.  To check out both types of Disney Digital Books, users need a valid library card, computer, and Internet connection.  At the end of the lending period, titles automatically expire and are returned to the collection.

Rock County Public Library partners with OverDrive, Inc. (www.overdrive.com), a global leader in digital media services, to offer the digital service.  You can easily log on to Overdrive by going to the library website printed above and click on the Overdrive icon. You can recognize these books in the collection because they will have “Mickey Mouse” ears in the upper-right corner of the cover image (as opposed to the book or audio icon).

To do a search that retrieves all Disney Online Books, go to the Advanced Search Screen and select “Disney Online Book” from the drop-down format menu, then click Search. Alternately, scroll down the Nebraska OverDrive Libraries home page (http://nebraska.lib.overdrive.com) and click on the big, orange “Check out a Disney Digital Book today!” square.
