RVLS Annual Meeting

The RVLS Annual Meeting was held on Friday, June 1, 2012, at the Dancing Leaf Earthen Lodge in Wellfleet. What a beautiful location! Our gracious hosts, Les and Jan Hosick, made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived. They opened their spectacular home for our Board Meeting at 9:30 and the Meeting of the Membership at 11:00.

Diane Wagner, wife of Nebraska Library Commission Director Rod Wagner, was amazed at the lofts and beautiful quilts in the Hosick home.

The food was very tasty and the connection of the meal to Native Americans from over 1,000 years ago was fascinating. We were treated to Authentic Buffalo stew with beans, Indian corn (hominy), and sunflower seeds. We also had blue corn muffins with local honey. These are ingredients that were available at the time when the earth lodges were built along the Medicine Valley. Native Americans also ate root vegetables and melons, so we had some of those, too. Delicious!

After the meetings, we were given a tour of the onsite museum and the earth lodge. I am sure we all learned things we had not known before. There is also a gift shop which offers unique Native American items and gifts from nature.
If you would like to see the Dancing Leaf Earthen Lodge for yourself, you can make reservations for camping spots, cabins, and even the earth lodge. See the website at http://www.dancingleaf.com.
