Schuyler Public Library Position Available- Library Assistant with Cataloging

Position Description 

Perform routine library and data records services work.  Work involves compiling records, sorting and shelving books, and issuing and receiving library materials.  Work requires ability to work under moderate supervision.

  • Maintain Confidentiality of all library users.
  • Communicate well with patrons.  Respond to requests from the public in person, over the phone, and/or via mail.
  • Catalog print and non-print materials using OCLC Connexion Browser, Sirsi Dynix, and the Dewey Decimal Classification system. (Note: training will be provided.)
  • Perform Interlibrary loan duties using OCLC. Maintain accurate files of items loaned and borrowed to/from other libraries.  (Note: training will be provided.)
  • Ability and willingness to attend professional development classes, conferences, meetings and trainings.   
  • Work at Circulation desk – Check out books, periodicals, and audio-visual materials. Processes the mail and new library resources.
    • Receive library materials to be checked in.
    • Register new patrons.
    • Respect patron privacy.
    • Keep policy forms updated for patrons.
  • Copy and fax materials as requested by patrons.
  • Shelve books and other library materials in proper places.
  • Help patrons with research using print materials and computer resources. 
  • Assist patrons with computer catalog and public access computers.
  • Assist with computer maintenance.
  • Perform microfilm and other research as requested.
  • Read shelves, cover, and repair books. Assist other staff as the need arises.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum/Essential Qualifications needed to perform jobs

Willingness and ability to work a varied schedule, primarily evenings and weekends, attention to detail; ability to use computers and willingness to learn cataloging and interlibrary loan system software; ability to work without close supervision; dependability; good communication skills; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to problem solve.
