April 2014

An Introduction

CAM01394As the new director of the library, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to thank the community and our patrons for all their support and encouragement during this transition. It’s been wonderful to hear everyone’s kind words, so thank you.

For those that don’t know me, my name is Monica Tidyman, I am married and have three boys. We have lived in Stromsburg 12 years. Philip works at Strobel Manufacturing in Clarks, NE as a trans load trailer technician and our boys are; Daniel, a senior at Cross County schools, Aaron, a freshman and Benjamin, a 7th grader.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha where I completed my Bachelor’s degree in General Studies with a Library Science concentration. I have minor concentrations in Public Administration and Religious studies.

I have worked at the Stromsburg Public Library as an Assistant for the past year and a half. Previously, I have directed the summer reading program and worked as an intern at the library. I have also worked at Cross County schools as a para in the library and in the elementary school.

Reading is a passion for me and I love to share that passion with others. It gives me great satisfaction to connect people with the perfect book and see the excitement in their eyes when they have finished a wonderful read.

I have enjoyed getting to know our patrons over the past months and look forward to continuing and expanding our relationship.

April 13-19 is set aside as National Library Week. I would invite everyone to stop by the library during the week to take in one of the activities. We will be having a Book Sale Blow-Out in the meeting room all week with many bargains available. Our regularly scheduled lapsit time for 1-4 year olds will be held on Tuesday, the 15th. All participants will have a chance to win a “Wee Read” bag full of goodies. On Wednesday, the Friends of the Library will be hosting an Open House reception from 4 pm until 6 pm. Stop by after work for refreshments and learn more about the library and the Friends group. We will also hold a drawing for a book every quarter hour during the Open House.

Please watch for upcoming events and activities in the newspaper, or on the library webpage at www.libraries.ne.gov/stromsburg. You can also find us on Facebook! Just search for “Stromsburg Public Library”. I look forward to serving our community.

Diana Johnson Says Good-Bye as Library Director After 16 years of Service

By Diana Johnson

As I write my final article for the Stromsburg Public Library, I look back at the 16 plus years with fondness. This position has truly been a gift. I have met so many kind, pleasant people, who have walked through the doors. I have been fortunate to work with different board members, who believe in functioning as a team with the director to carry out the mission of the library: providing information and services for lifelong learning and enjoyment.

The last 16 years have seen the replacing of the old card catalog with a database for finding materials, a move to a new library facility, and cataloging/circulation software now accessible in cyberspace or the “cloud.” Finding library materials is accomplished on any computer through the library web page and library updates are accessible on the our Facebook page.

I want to thank everyone who made the retirement reception so special. Those who made all the preparations and those who stopped in to wish me well. It was a lovely afternoon. The library is now in the capable hands of Monica Tidyman, who has done an outstanding job as assistant. She is welcoming, an avid reader, and tech savvy.
