Author “Cowgirl Peg” Sundberg will be doing a series of appearances in Meridian Library System libraries the week of January 20th. The following programs are open to the public:
January 21st: Ainsworth Public Library at 7:00 p.m.
January 22nd: Loup City School/Public Library: 10:30 focusing on K-3; 1:30 focusing on grades 4-6.
January 22nd: Kearney Public Library & Information Center: 4:00 p.m.
With the younger kids (K-3), she will be talking about her books and how they teach about manners and behaviors. With the older kids (4-6), she will be talking about the writing process.

Have you ever thought of joining up a book club? October is National Reading Group Month, and we are looking forward to starting up a book club or two!
There are so many advantages to being a part of a book club! You may end up reading books you normally wouldn’t pick up, you will be a part of interesting discussions, you may even get to know a few people you wouldn’t normally wouldn’t have the opportunity to!

The winners for the ‘Get a Library Card’ drawing were Samantha Kusek and Todd Schneider! They each received a $20 Chamber Cash certificate. We have had several NEW patrons come into the library during the month of September. We love giving out new library cards!
Please excuse the mess during the month of October! We have gotten new bookshelves in our library and are rearranging our collection to better suit your needs. Be patient with us! Hopefully the library will be more conveniently situated when we are completed. Thank you.
Another successful summer reading program is in the books. This year over 700 books were read and over 1550 points were earned by our busy readers! The top ten children reading the highest number of books, and the top ten children earning the most AR points (points earned from taking a computer test on the book read) received extra prizes and chamber bucks.
“Our goal was to encourage reading throughout the summer months” said Jennifer Fowler, Loup City’s public librarian. “We’ve been busy this summer, attendance was excellent. Hopefully, the teachers notice the difference in the children that participated in the program.”
Our top reader for the number of books read goes to Christina Boncyznski, who read 52 books! Following close behind reading 50 books is Danica Heil. Aidan Glidden received third place with 46 books read. Jeslyn Dvorak, Delanie Heil, Courtney Goc, Kennidy Murphy, Jessica Stieb, Bailey Kuehl, and Eva Jaixen received recognition as well for rounding out our top ten.
Our top reader for the number of AR points earned goes to Courtney Goc who had 340.7 pts! Second place goes to Taylor Ference (203.2pts), and third place to Christina Bonczynski (115.5pts). Emily Morrow, Gretchen Hodge, Bailey Kuehl, Tianna Nelson, Trey Vogler, Delanie Heil, and Sydney Wardyn also all received recognition for placing in the top ten.

What is a library? It seems obvious to me what a library is. But when attempting to sum up exactly what a library is, its a little more difficult than I would think it should be.
What pops into your mind when you hear the word ‘library’?
I think of a cool and quiet place filled with books of all sizes and colors. I think of the musty smell of old books. The feeling of calmness comes to mind, as a library has always been somewhat of a sanctuary to me. I appreciate the fact that I can borrow books, read about the worlds within the pages, and return them without paying a cent.
Type in ‘what is a library’ in the search engine and you get all sorts of answers.
“A library is a building that houses books to lend to people. Libraries are free for users to come and use books.”
“A library is a building where you can go in there and borrow books for a certain period of time. There are libraries in a lot of places including there is probably one in your school.”
“A library is somewhere that you can find all kinds of books. Some people like to go to a library to study. It is always quiet in a library.”
“A library should be a collection of information, sources, resources, and services.”
Visit our library today. See what all we have to offer you. Encourage your children to become familiar with the library. Its one of the most useful places left that they can visit for free! 
Two weeks and three days left of the SUMMER READING PROGRAM! Don’t worry if you haven’t had time to get the kids in to sign up. It just takes a minute, and then they can get busy reading or testing on books that they have read at home. There are so many great benefits to getting kids to read before school starts up again in August. Besides getting them in the habit of reading and improving their reading skills, studies show that many children involved in a summer reading program gain significant vocabulary, socializing, and even self-disciplined learning skills during this time. Children are more apt to learn during this period, as the pressure of full-time school and other events is no longer apparent.
Just a reminder that next week, July 2-6th, we will be closed for the annual cleaning. So if you are getting low on books, or need to return some, make sure to stop in this week!
