The 4th of July

We will be closed the 3rd & 4th of July in observance of Independence Day.

Bookworms Counted for Children’s Book Week

Nathaniel Miller was the winner of the closet guess for the amount of bookworms in the flower pot. Nathaniel’s guess was 550. There were 549 gummi worms in the pot. Congratulations!!!!

Book winners included: Joslyn Hammond, Savannah McCarty, Kaiden Porter, Kenzie Michaelis, Tavin Rouselle, Maria Ulloa, Asher Wilson, Abel Wilson, Bronson Frazier and Hannah Peterson.

Children’s Book Week activities include: a bunny scavenger hunt, (kids searched shelves to find bunnies hidden among the shelves); book drawing; candy guess; bookmark design class, comic book fun with Cody Dame from Game On(all the children received a free comic book);  cupcake decorating class and an evening story time with pajamas and milk and cookies.

“BE OUR HERO” as Registration for Summer Reading Begins May 1st

Registration for McCook City Library’s Summer Reading Program, “Every Hero Has A Story” will begin on Friday, May 1st and end on Friday, May 29th. This program is for children going into kindergarten through 6th grade with a current and active library card.

Times are:

 Kindergartner’s Unite(those children going into kindergarten)

Tuesdays 10:00-11:30 am

June 2-July 21

1st and 2nd Grade

Tuesdays 1:30-3:00 pm

June 2-July 21

3rd and 4th Grade

Thursdays 1:30-3:00 pm

June 4-July 23

5th and 6th Grade

Wednesdays 1:30-3:00 pm

June 3-July 22

Themes for different weeks will include: “Be A Hero”; “Library League”; “Community Heroes”; Heroes Throughout History”; “Superheroes to the Rescue”; “Spectacular Sidekicks”; “Villians”; and “Bam, Pow, Read Superhero Training Camp.”

Activities for Children’s Book Week

Children’s Book Week will be celebrated May 4-8 at the McCook City Library for children 3 and up with your library card. Going on all week will be a candy guess, book drawing and  help put bookworms on our dirt pile.

Schedule of daily activities include:

Monday-Bookmark Designs, 3:45-5:00 pm-come and design your own bookmarks and take it home with you to use

Tuesday-Comic Books Galore, 3:45-5:00 pm-listen to Cody Dame from Game On tell us about comic books and them write and draw your own comic strip

Wednesday-Cupcake Decorating, 3:45-5:00 pm-sit down and decorate a  cupcake to go with your favorite book

Thursday-Evening Story Time, 7:00-7:45 pm-wear your pajamas and listen to some quiet stories to help get you ready for bed (maybe milk and cookies too)

Friday-Treats All Day-stop in anytime and pick up a book bag

2015 Poetry Contest Participants

The McCook City Library hosted poetry contests to celebrate National Poetry Month in April. We displayed poetry books on the adult and children side, along with bookmarks with poems. Contestants in grades Pre-K-3 were asked to color a picture that went with a poem, grades 4-5 were to make a poem out of the letters, L-I-B-R-A-R-Y, and 6th grade and up made a poem out of, I L-O-V-E   P-O-E-T-R-Y.

Book Winners for National Library Week

National Library Week was a success. On Monday we had Scrabble Day, with hard candy with letters on it; Tuesday-Library Workers Day; Wednesday-Pink Eraser Day, we handed out pencils with erasers (all colors); Thursday-High Five Day, we had patrons trace their hand prints and we displayed them and of course gave lots of “High Fives” and Firday-Cheeseball Day, we gave bags of Cheese crackers to patrons.

During the week we had sign ups for book drawings. The following received books: Childrens Books: Colin Day, Kendall Miller, Savannah McCarty, Adelyn Meyer, Tavin Rousselle, Lydia Barth, Everett Hanson, Chloe Brown, Connor Tidyman and Avery Broomfield.  Adult Book recipients include: Anna Gray, Dick Quinn, Deb Stevens, Abby Barth, Michael Snare, eric Lucero, Peggy Appleyardm Pat Pierce, Rose Dickerson, and Kim Williams.

Who Took Home the Easter Baskets?

Thanks to all who signed up for the Easter basket drawings. We had alot!!!!!!! Winners of the drawing include: Hannah Thompson, Erin Marks, Claire Weber, Lily Spencer, Jan Hoyt, Paige Broomfield. What will be the next drawing?

New Officers Elected

New officers have been elected for the 678 Club. Chairman is Katie Kjendal, Vice-Chairman is Brianna Hazen and Secretary is Emily Kjendal. This group will be doing some volunteering at the library, helping with library programs, help with book choices and coming up with ideas to attract more youth to the library. Their next meeting will be April 16th, 2015 at 5 pm. The theme for the club meeting is “Back in the Day.” They will be dining on some old fashion treats, playing childhood games and reading stories from their youth. Congrats to the newly elected officers. If interested  please call the Library 308-345-1906 and ask for Diane.

Teen Advisory Board

We are looking for junior and high schoolers who are interested in helping with youth decisions at the McCook Public Library. The group will meet once a month on the second Thursday from 5-5:30 p.m. The group will review books and make recommendations, help with programs, help come up with ways for youth to use the library and ideas on how to get more youth involved and help with programs. We will be designing t-shirts for recognition when out and about.This group is just getting started, if interested contact Jody or Diane at 345-1906 or stop by the library. Our first meeting will be Feb 12th at 5 pm.

Youth Activities Going On

The McCook Public Library has some new programs we are providing for youth. The first is “Let’s Play”. We are inviting 3rd -6th graders to come on the early out Wednesdays and play games with us. We play board games of all types, card games, bingo and twister. We also provide a little snack. The time is 2:30-4:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.
The next group we have is the 6-7-8 Club. This is for youth in the 6th, 7th or 8th grade who like to read and enjoy different activities and meeting new youth. We meet on the second Thursday of the month from 5:30-7:00 pm. we have a big snack and enjoy games and book reviews. our next meeting will be February 12th. Any questions contact Diane at 345-1906.
