It’s Good to Be Back

I have been sick for the past week, and it feels good to be back at the library today.  Thanks to Jess and Joann for taking over for me. They did a good job.  I’ve just unpacked 11 new books. It may take a few days to get them processed and on the shelf, but they look like some good ones.

Sargent Area Homesteaders

Here’s a famous picture taken by Solomon Butcher of the Sylvester Rawding family.  The image is deceiving because it appears that the cow is standing on the roof of the house.  Apparently Sylvester Rawding was also a deceiver and an expert at tall tales. Mr. Rawding claimed that a large bump on his head was from a Civil war bullet lodged in his forehead. You can read the rest of his story at the Nebraska Historical Society’s website.

Pioneer History of Nebraska

It’s fun to read about the pioneers that first settled this land. I find it especially interesting to read about Custer County history. The Sargent library has a number of Nebraska history books. Here are some of the most interesting ones.

Pioneer History of Custer County Nebraska – S. D. Butcher

Sargent, Nebraska 75th Anniversary Celebration 1958,   Sargent Centennial 1883 – 1983,   Sargent’s Quasquicentennial (125th) Celebration

No Time on My Hands – Grace Snyder (Custer County pioneer, biography)

When You and I Were Young, Nebraska! – Berna Hunter Chrisman (autobiography)

The Ladder of Rivers: The Story of I. P. Olive – Harry E. Chrisman

A Treasury of Nebraska Pioneer Folklore – Roger L Welsch

Battlefields of Nebraska – Thomas D. Phillips

Mollie – The journal of Mollie Dorsey Sanford in Nebraska and Colorado Territories

The Children’s Blizzard – David Laskin

Nebraska: An Illustrated History – Frederick C. Luebke

Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen – Bob Greene

Discarded Books

One of my least favorite jobs at the library is getting rid of old books. There is limited space,  so some of the books that are well worn or never get checked out have to be discarded. These books are available free (donations accepted) for whomever wants them. Come in and look them over. You may find the perfect book for you.

What Does Your Phone Number Spell?

Here’s an interesting website called Phone Spell that will generate words from your phone number. This makes it much easier for people to remember. Wouldn’t it be cool if the library’s number could be 308-527-READ or something similar? Well, alas, we’re not that lucky. The best combination they could come up with is 308-jar-gag1.  That’s probably not a great way to remember the library 🙂
