“The Light Between Oceans: A Novel” by M. L. Stedman

Spalding Library’s book club chooses “The Light Between Oceans: A Novel” by author M. L. Stedman. In 1918, after serving in WWI, Tom Sherbourne welcomes his quiet job as lighthouse keeper on Australia’s remote Janus Rock, as does his loving new wife. But three years later a childless Isabel is bereft after suffering her third miscarriage. Tending the new grave, Isabel hears the cry of a baby; a boat has washed ashore with a dead man—and a living infant.

Two years later, little Lucy has become the center of the Sherbourne’s world. But their happiness turns when a trip to the mainland brings the discovery that she was not orphaned…and a desperate woman still seeks her vanished daughter. M.L. Stedman’s extraordinary debut, “The Light Between Oceans”, is a riveting tale of good intentions and heartbreaking consequences. (from the publisher)

Library To Host Book Club Meeting

The Spalding Public Library will host the library’s book club meeting on Monday, March 7th, at 5:00p.m. The group will be discussing the book, “Orphan Train: A Novel”, by Christina Baker Kline. From 1854 to 1929 an estimated 250,000 orphaned, abandoned, and homeless children were sent by train, to towns in mid-western and western states, as well as Canada and Mexico. An estimated six to seven thousand youngsters rode orphan trains to Nebraska, and Spalding, was one of those selected train towns. When the orphan train movement began, it was estimated that 30,000 abandoned children were living on the streets of New York City. This period of mass relocation of children in the United States is widely recognized as the beginning of documented foster care in America.

Please join us at this book club meeting- it will be an interesting topic to discuss!!
