Rush Revere Books Donated To The Library

America’s #1 radio talk-show host and multi-million-copy #1 New York Times bestselling author presents books for young readers with a history teacher who travels back in time to have adventures with exceptional Americans.

Rush Limbaugh wrote “Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims”, the first in his children’s adventure series, to make American history fun!  The book begins aboard the Mayflower and follows the Pilgrims through their first winter in the New World. American history teacher Rush Revere time-travels with two young students to see American history first-hand.  Always riding along with him is his trusty talking horse Liberty, who is hungry for knowledge –and food!  Come along with the time-traveling adventure crew as they build forts, sword fight, explore, speak with exceptional people like Squanto and William Bradford, and witness the first Thanksgiving.  There is so much to learn!  Join Rush Revere on the first adventure!  “Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims” also includes beautiful full color illustrations and original documents from the period. “Rush Revere and First Patriots”, the second in Rush Limbaugh’s children’s adventure series takes us to the time right before the start of the American Revolution. History teacher Rush Revere and talking horse Liberty take along the time-traveling crew to meet exceptional Americans including Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry.  Rush Revere even takes on King George III of Great Britain in London!  Middle School students Tommy, Freedom, and Cam team up to make sure snobby Elizabeth does not change history!  Adults may be surprised to learn little things about American history they missed in school.  Children will learn while laughing with snarky horse Liberty.  The pages are filled with illustrations and documents that bring history to life.  See the spark that lit the fuse of the American Revolution in Rush Revere and the First Patriots! Spalding Library Book Club’s Choice For October Is “The Kitchen House” A Novel By Author Kathleen Grissom

In this gripping New York Times bestseller, Kathleen Grissom brings to life a thriving plantation in Virginia in the decades before the Civil War, where a dark secret threatens to expose the best and worst in everyone tied to the estate.

Orphaned during her passage from Ireland, young, white Lavinia arrives on the steps of the kitchen house and is placed, as an indentured servant, under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate slave daughter. Lavinia learns to cook, clean, and serve food, while guided by the quiet strength and love of her new family.

In time, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, caring for the master’s opium-addicted wife and befriending his dangerous yet protective son. She attempts to straddle the worlds of the kitchen and big house, but her skin color will forever set her apart from Belle and the other slaves.

Through the unique eyes of Lavinia and Belle, Grissom’s debut novel unfolds in a heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful story of class, race, dignity, deep-buried secrets, and familial bonds. (from amazon.com)

Spalding Public Library Has Non-Fiction Western Books!!

These non-fiction western books are on loan to our library for the next 3 months:

‘The Last Gunfight: The Real Story Of The Shootout at the O.K. Corral-And How It Changed The American West” by Jeff Guinn

A New York Times bestseller, Jeff Guinn’s definitive, myth-busting account of the most famous gunfight in American history reveals who Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, and the Clantons and McLaurys really were and what the shootout was all about.

“Life Of Tom Horn” by Tom Horn

Tom Horn was one of the Wild West’s most famous men. He served as a lawman, a detective, outlaw, and assassin, and he was controversially hanged in 1903 for a murder he may not have committed. This is the story of his life, written in his own words.

“A Texas Ranger” by N.A. Jennings

Eighteen-year-old Napoleon Augustus Jennings came to Rexas in 1874 and joined a special force of Texas ranger charged with border patrol under the command of L.H. McNelly. At this time the South Texas region was home to hundreds of outlaws and riffraff, and some three thousand Mexican guerrillas under Juan Cortina and others were raiding settlers on both sides of the Rio Grande. McNelly’s Rangers stormed into this lawless area for two reasons, according to Jennings: “Two have fun, and to carry out a set policy of terrorizing the Mexicans at every opportunity,” which would gain them the reputation as “fire-eating, quarrelsome daredevils” and make their job of subduing the guerrillas an easier prospect.

Spalding Library’s Book Club Chooses “Saving CeeCee Honeycutt” For The Month Of September

Twelve-year-old CeeCee Honeycutt is in trouble. For years, she has been the caretaker of her psychotic mother, Camille-the tiara-toting, lipstick-smeared laughingstock of an entire town-a woman trapped in her long-ago moment of glory as the 1951 Vidalia Onion Queen.  But when Camille is hit by a truck and killed, CeeCee is left to fend for herself.  To the rescue comes her previously unknown great-aunt, Tootie Caldwell.  In her vintage Packard convertible, Tootie whisks CeeCee away to Savannah’s perfumed world of prosperity and Southern eccentricity, a world that seems to be run entirely by women.  From the exotic Miz Thelma Rae Goodpepper, who bathes in her backyard bathtub and uses garden slugs as her secret weapons, to Tootie’s all-knowing housekeeper, Oletta Jones, to Violene Hobbs, who entertains a local police officer in her canary-yellow peignoir, the women of Gaston Street keep CeeCee entertained and enthralled for an entire summer.
Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman’s sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, “packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart.”  It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.
