April’s Book Club Selection- “Code Name Verity” by Elizabeth Wein

This month’s selected book chosen by members of the Spalding Public Library Book Club is titled, “Code Name Verity”. Rich in historical detail and intrigue, “Code Name Verity” is a vivid reminder of what makes historical fiction so compelling. In exchange for a temporary stay of execution and lesser forms of torture, a young female spy captured in Nazi-occupied France writes a confession of her activities in the Resistance. Her story is that of two women who should never have crossed paths, yet were destined to become the best of friends and embark upon the covert mission that would determine which of them would live or die. Courage born of friendship, fierce hope, and surprising ironies abound in this spellbinding novel that will appeal to teens and adult readers alike. Stop by the library and check out this book!

LEGO Club

Hey Kids!

Do you like playing with LEGOs?  Then let’s start a LEGO Club at the Spalding Public Library!! If you’re a great LEGO builder, or a first timer, this is the place for you.  First we need to acquire LEGOs.  Do you have too many LEGOs? Have you outgrown your LEGO collection? Has your LEGO collection outgrown you? If you have answered yes to any of these questions please consider donating them to the library. We are hoping to have enough LEGOs to get the club started in May. Just bring them to the library on Mondays or Thursdays from 10a.m.- 12p.m. & 4-7p.m.

Building with LEGOs is one way to encourage children to think creatively, to problem-solve, and to experience hands-on engineering skills. This is a way to offer simple STEM programming in our library. Group building encourages peer interaction, conversation, and cooperative play.

The overall goal of the new club is to provide the space and tools needed for children to gain valuable lifelong skills while engaging children in a fun activity. Once a month the club will meet and each club session will last an hour.  Participation is free and open to elementary aged children.  A different theme will be announced at the start of each session and children will be encouraged to build creatively based on the theme. All materials must stay at the library, so bring a camera to capture your adventures!!

Supplies Needed For LEGO Club:

 Basic sets of LEGOs

LEGO baseplates (to display LEGO creations)

LEGO mini figures sets

Containers/bins with lids (to keep LEGOs organized)

Meet The Author, Pat Hall

Author Pat (Walkowiak) Hall has graciously donated a signed copy of her recently published children’s book entitled, “Ida May’s Borrowed Trouble” to the Spalding Public Library.  Born and raised in Spalding, Pat Hall believes in the old saying, “What goes around comes around.” So does Ida May Hutchinson, the heroine of Hall’s new children’s book.  Ida May takes on prairie fires, floods and blizzards. But, surprisingly, she is not happy when her frontier farm prospers.  So the fearless Ida May sets out to “borrow trouble” from her neighbors. She mends their fences, heals their sick babies and chases their wolves into the next county. Lo and behold, she feels good again, until her luck changes and trouble overwhelms her. The once brave Ida May is reduced to tears. Then, a knock comes to her door. Outside are all the folks she ever helped, and they have come to borrow back the trouble. The book’s heartfelt message is simple:  Life is happier when people help each other.  Pat wrote the story 20 years ago, when it was published in a magazine. Recently, she and her daughter Emmeline, who drew the illustrations, turned the story into an inspiring tale about how to live.  Pat and her husband live in Janesville, Wisconsin.

                              New Books At The Library!

Jennifer Crusie- “Maybe This Time”

Spalding Public Library Book Club Members Discuss “Animal Dreams” by Barbara Kingsolver

Spalding Public Library’s book club members met Thursday, March 5th in the library’s meeting room, to discuss the February’s book club selection  “Animal Dreams” by Barbara Kingsolver. “Animal Dreams” is a passionate and complex novel about love, forgiveness, and one woman’s struggle to find her place in the world.  The library has another best selling novel by this author entitled “The Bean Trees”.   In addition, two more of Barbara’s books are available to borrow through OverDrive on Spalding Public Library’s website at http://libraries.ne.gov/spalding.  March’s book club book selection is “The Time Traveler’s Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger. New Authors Introduced at Spalding Public Library!

Bestselling Authors Katie MacAlister, Gemma Halliday, and Elizabeth Peters are being introduced to all who visit the library. Ever the romantic, author Katie MacAlister decided one day to write a story that included all her favorite literary elements—dishy guys, strong women, and lots and lots of humor. She’s been blessed to write more than forty books since that first one, and is always madly in love with her latest hero. Gemma Halliday is the author of the High Heels Mysteries, the Hollywood Headlines Mysteries, and the Deadly Cool series of young adult books. Gemma’s books have received numerous awards, including a Golden Heart, a National Reader’s Choice award and three RITA nominations. When she’s not out saving the world from dastardly demons she writes an eclectic mix of romantic comedies, mysteries, thrillers, children’s books, and non-fiction. ELIZABETH PETERS, whose New York Times best-selling novels are often set against historical backdrops, earned a Ph.D. in Egyptology at the University of Chicago. She also writes best-selling books under the pseudonym Barbara Michaels.  She does a wonderful job combining mystery, history and archeology into a fast paced story that entertains the reader. Then of course we can’t forget the romance (implied, naturally).  All three authors, including Barbara Michaels, have books which can be borrowed online through the library’s website at http://libraries.ne.gov/spalding.
