Check Out A Suspenseful And Thrilling Novel At The Library!

Spalding Library’s book club members are reading a murder mystery this month. “The Apprentice” by Tess Gerritsen, is the second of the Rizzoli and Isles series and takes place in a boiling hot Boston summer. Adding to the city’s woes is a series of shocking crimes, in which wealthy men are made to watch while their wives are brutalized. A sadistic demand that ends in abduction and death. The pattern suggests one man: serial killer Warren Hoyt, recently removed from the city’s streets. Police can only assume an acolyte is at large, a maniac basing his attacks on the twisted medical techniques of the madman he so admires. At least that’s what Detective Jane Rizzoli thinks. Forced again to confront the killer who scarred her—literally and figuratively—she is determined to finally end Hoyt’s awful influence. But this time around, the vendetta is more vicious than she ever would have imagined (from the publisher). Stop by the library and pick up your copy of this fast paced mystery today!

Dancing On Broken Glass

This month’s book, chosen by the library’s book club members is “Dancing On Broken Glass” a debut fiction novel by author, Ka Hancock. It is a powerfully written novel offering an intimate look at a beautiful marriage and how bipolar disorder and cancer affect it. “Dancing on Broken Glass” by Ka Hancock perfectly illustrates the enduring power of love. The book’s main characters, Lucy Houston and Mickey Chandler, probably shouldn’t have fallen in love, let alone gotten married. They’re both plagued with faulty genes—he has bipolar disorder, and she has a ravaging family history of breast cancer. But when their paths cross on the night of Lucy’s twenty-first birthday, sparks fly, and there’s no denying their chemistry.  Cautious every step of the way, they are determined to make their relationship work—and they put it all in writing.  Mickey promises to take his medication. Lucy promises not to blame him for what is beyond his control. He promises honesty. She promises patience. Like any marriage, they have good days and bad days—and some very bad days. In dealing with their unique challenges, they make the heartbreaking decision not to have children. But when Lucy shows up for a routine physical just shy of their eleventh anniversary, she gets an impossible surprise that changes everything. Everything. Suddenly, all their rules are thrown out the window, and the two of them must redefine what love really is. An unvarnished portrait of a marriage that is both ordinary and extraordinary, “Dancing on Broken Glass” takes readers on an unforgettable journey of the heart (from the publisher). Get your copy of this month’s selected novel soon! The library’s book club members will be discussing this novel on Monday, April 2nd at 5pm.

“The Postmistress” A Novel By Sarah Blake

In 1940, Iris James is the postmistress in coastal Franklin, Massachusetts. Iris knows more about the townspeople than she will ever say, and believes her job is to deliver secrets. Yet one day she does the unthinkable: slips a letter into her pocket, reads it, and doesn’t deliver it.

Meanwhile, Frankie Bard broadcasts from overseas with Edward R. Murrow. Her dispatches beg listeners to pay heed as the Nazis bomb London nightly. Most of the townspeople of Franklin think the war can’t touch them. But both Iris and Frankie know better…

“The Postmistress” is a tale of two worlds-one shattered by violence, the other willfully naïve-and of two women whose job is to deliver the news, yet who find themselves unable to do so. Through their eyes, and the eyes of everyday people caught in history’s tide, it examines how stories are told, and how the fact of war is borne even through everyday life (from amazon.com.). The Spalding Library’s book club members have chosen this novel to read for the month of February. They will be discussing this book on Monday, March 5th.
