Banned Book Week celebrates your freedom to choose and to express one’s opinion even if it is unpopular.  Throughout history individuals and groups have attempted, and will continue to attempt to suppress and censor materials and ideas that do not agree with their beliefs.  A challenge is an attempt to have materials removed from the library or school, where a banned book, is a book that was actually taken off the shelves.

Every year the American Library Association along with libraries all over the United States observe Banned Book Week, the last week in September.  This year Banned Book Week will be observed September 21st – 27th.

You can check out the books from the challenged lists that the library has on their shelves.    In 2013 the most Challenged book was the Captain Underpants (series) by Dav Pilkey.  Celebrate your right to read.  Read a banned book.  To find out more go to the American Library Association webpage.  http://ala.org
