Summer Reading – Every Hero Has a Story

7 July 2015

The Broadwater Public Library will have its Summer Reading Program, held on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout July.

This year’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story”. These are heroes from comic books, cartoons, movies, and television. They are also historical figures, such as famous inventors and war heroes and movie stars. There are also “everyday” heroes, including firefighters, police… even our parents and neighbors!

After discussing what kinds of heroes there are, we will decide what superhero WE are, what they are like, and make our own costumes to make ourselves like those heroes. We will have new, unique heroes for every child.

This program is for children of all ages.

St Patrick’s Day program

9 March 2015

On Tuesday, March 14 at 4:30 PM the Broadwater Public Library will hold a St. Patrick’s Day program.

We will read Green Eggs & Ham by Dr. Seuss, and make a craft which you can take home with you.

The craft is a unique one, and is something which you will want to save for Easter eggs.

Bring a clean egg carton.

Hint: Where do you think green eggs come from?GreenChicken

Valentine’s Day

4 February 2015

On Saturday, February 14th, we will hold a Valentine’s Day Children’s program. We will be decorating marshmallows with edible markers, for the children to take home and eat give to the person of their choice. We will read from Valentine Friends by Ann Schweninger.

If you will be holding your own Valentine’s Day party, or just want a special meal to eat with that special someone, the Broadwater Public Library has numerous cookbooks with just the thing – whether it is a hearty meal, a delicious desert, or scrumptious snacks. We also have books and other materials for hosting parties for all ages.

If reading Valentine’s Day themes is more along your line, I have several books to suggest.

  • A Catered Valentine’s Day by Isis Crawford
  • My Nerdy Valentine by Vicki Lewis Thompson
  • Be My Valentine by Debbie Macomber

A Catered Valentine’s Day is a mystery with a Valentine’s Day theme, including recipes!

Chuck Norris Film Festival

On Saturday, February 7th, we will be holding a Chuck Norris Film Festival. The movie schedule is as follows:

3 pm. A Force of One (PG)
5 pm Silent Rage (R)
These will be shown in the Village Meeting room, at 251 N. Starr Street in Broadwater. All are invited, however due to MPAA ratings, Silent Rage will require children under 17 to be accompanied by a parent, and Top Dog will require parents to be present for children under 13.

Halloween

1 November 2014

Hauntings and warnings about the potential for a zombie apocalypse did not deter six of Broadwater’s most hearty children from coming to the Library in their costumes for our Halloween program. Although, evidently, it was too cold for any but one zombie to come to the Library, pictures of zombies were colored. The one zombie left as soon as he saw the bottle of Embalming Fluid, setting next to the Librarian dressed as a creepy undertaker.

We had our reading of “The Thud”. All of the children won the coloring contest! All were given free t-shirts as well as a treat-bag partly filled with toys.

Back from vacation in time for Halloween and Zombie Pandemic

23 October 2014

I’m back from a vacation.

I brought back with me several books, including a new book Short Stories Galore by Daniel Hoyt Daniels, donated and autographed by the author. This book has a wealth of stories which will be used in adult storytimes this winter. The stories range from homey, to mysteries, to romance, to horror – and often have surprise endings which I could not anticipate until the last couple of paragraphs in the story!

The Broadwater Public Library was donated several books from the Ponca City, Oklahoma library. There are several books of library programs. We cannot wait to implement some of these programs for children, teens, adults, and all ages this winter.

A different sort of Halloween program is planned. I am looking for teens and adults to volunteer either to help in the Library with the program, to dress as zombies, and a member of the fire department or someone working in other emergency services to give a short talk about disaster preparedness.

(Shhhhh! Don’t tell the kids!) The Halloween program, involving reading a story adapted from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and Other Tales from the Crematory will be interrupted by the Zombie Apocalypse, including someone having a (fake, of course) injury from a zombie. The children, volunteers, and I will have to deal with this “Halloween Disaster” using the materials available in the Library – including the Internet, library catalog, telephone, periodicals, videos, books, including the CDC comic book Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic. In a short time, we will find out what sorts of supplies we should have on hand, where such supplies are kept, such as a first aid kit, how to keep ourselves safe, about getting help from the Broadwater Fire Department, to bring us food and drinks (e.g., cookies and punch), and can tell us a bit about getting further training from the Red Cross or other organizations. This information could come in handy in case of a more likely occurrence such as a blizzard, tornado, fire, flood, extended power outage, injury, or something happens before a Zombie Apocalypse.

An alternative program of reading Trixie the Halloween Fairy by Daisy Meadows and coloring will be offered for young children or anyone who becomes too scared of the Zombies.

Movie: Race Against the Harvest

21 September 2014

On Tuesday, Sept 23rd at 7:00 p.m. we will be showing “Race Against the Harvest”. The movie is about Kansas farmers who desperately rely on independent harvesters to gather their crops before weather destroys them.

Details of this movie may be found at IMDB.

Free T-shirts! Final Summer Reading Program

17 August 2014

This Saturday at 9:00, we will have our final Summer Reading Program.

We will read from A Kettle of Hawks by Jim Arnosky, then will color pictures of hawks and other large birds of pray. T-shirts will be given to all participants!
