FREE Computer Classes Held at the Library

FREE Computer classes will be offered at the library in October (coordinated by Central Community College-Columbus).

*How/Where do you save your files and how do you find them?

Tuesday, October 2, 6-8 p.m., Debb Wolfe, Extended Learning Services Computer Instructor

Prerequisites: Previous hands-on computer.

Learn how to save your files and how to open them back up to view or change them. Students will gain the skills to be able to add (upload) pictures to a website (Facebook, Ebay, Email, etc).

* How do you compose a letter on the computer?

Tuesday, October 9, 6-8 p.m., Debb Wolfe, Extended Learning Services Computer Instructor

Prerequisites: Previous hands-on computer:

Learn how to compose a basic letter, and how to add a few special effects (font style and size, uppercase/

lowercase, bold, italicize, underline and change color) to make your letter personal using Microsoft Word.

* What is the Internet and how do you use it?

Tuesday, October 16, 6-8 p.m., Debb Wolfe, Extended Learning Services Computer Instructor

Prerequisites: Previous hands-on computer:

Learn the basic terminology and screen layout. Learn how to search for information, and how to maneuver through a web site.

*Introduction to eBay

Saturday, October 6, 1-3 p.m.

If you have computer experience and an interest in learning about

ebay, then this workshop with Rae Osenbaugh is for you. Rae will cover the basics of ebay so you can become comfortable

navigating the site. In this class you will learn how to sell an item on ebay.

The library is serving as one of the web video recording locations for “2012 Campaign Connection Voter Voices”.  A unique election year project of NET News (Nebraska Public Television & Radio), in partnership with the NE Library Commission.  NET News is gathering your thoughts, perspectives and questions to share with the U.S. Senate candidates (and the rest of Nebraska) on television, radio, web and social media.  Be sure to stop by to record your video!  It’s really easy to do. 🙂

Fall/Winter Hours Begin at the Library

We’re on our Winter Hours now—

Monday –Thursday 10 AM – 8 PM; Friday 10 AM – 6 PM, and Saturday 10 AM – 2 PM.

You have more hours to be able to stop in and check out our newest books, use our computers, get help with your Kindle or other e-books, get more booksyou’re your children for Reading Counts at the CCPS, use our Cricut machine, and a host of other things to do at the library.

Special Reading Event October 11th!

October is National Reading Group Month, and the Central City Public Library is going to feature a special reading event for people who love mysteries.  The library is borrowing 16 copies of the book “The Number One Ladies Detective Agency” by Alexander McCall Smith.  These copies will be available for people to check out and read  after September 12.   There will be a book discussion/mystery event on Thursday, October 11, at 7 PM in the meeting room. This series is about a lady detective in Botswana, Africa, today, although it could be happening right around the corner as well.  She and her secretary/assistant are the main characters and they are a fun study in character.  The discussion will center around the way the author depicts the characters and setting, and how this kind of mystery differs from the “hard-core” detective stories.  Join us for some refreshments as we take a look at a different kind of mystery series.  Stop in and reserve a  book today.  We’ll give you a call as soon as they arrive.

STUDENT AIDE POSITION NOW OPEN AT THE LIBRARY!

Youth News

The library is currently accepting applications for the position of Student Aide!  High school students, 15 years of age and older, are eligible to apply.  The job averages 8 hours per week (includes Saturdays).  Applications may be picked up at the library through August 31st.  Please contact the library with any questions.

What you would be doing:  Shelving books, assisting in the youth department as needed, straightening shelves, checking items in and out, etc.

An example of the work schedule would be:

Saturdays 10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.  Tuesdays & Thursdays 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. (hours could vary based on school schedule)

The Library’s CORN-a-Licious Recipe Book

The library is asking for your corn recipes! What for, you may ask? In conjunction with the Nebraska State and the National Hand Cornhusking Contest being held at the Merrick County Fairgrounds on Oct. 20-21, the library is asking for your help in publishing a recipe book all about corn. Recipes for the library’s “CORN-a-licious” recipe book will be accepted until Oct. 1. Recipes with anything corn will be accepted. Forms are available at the library, or recipes may be emailed to: cc.library.ne@gmail.com  Watch for more info to follow about the Tasting Contest at the library on Oct. 17th! Cookbooks will be for sale starting at the Tasting Contest, at the Cornhusking Contest, and at the library.  Proceeds will go to the library for a display case (to display the creative talents of area residents). 🙂
