Rosalie Lippincott Special Guest Speaker at Lone Tree Readers Book Discussion Group

Rosalie Lippincott was the special guest speaker at the April Lone Tree Readers Book Discussion Group meeting.  The book that was discussed was Bob Green’s book entitled “Once Upon a Town:  the Miracle of the North Platte Canteen”.   Mrs. Lippincott spoke about her experiences as a volunteer at the canteen.

In search of “the best America there ever was,” bestselling author and award-winning journalist Bob Greene finds it in a small Nebraska town few people pass through today—a town where Greene discovers the echoes of the most touching love story imaginable: a love story between a country and its sons.

During World War II, American soldiers from every city and walk of life rolled through North Platte, Nebraska, on troop trains en route to their ultimate destinations in Europe and the Pacific. The tiny town, wanting to offer the servicemen warmth and support, transformed its modest railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen.

Every day of the year, every day of the war, the Canteen—staffed and funded entirely by local volunteers—was open from five a.m. until the last troop train of the day pulled away after midnight. Astonishingly, this remote plains community of only 12,000 people provided welcoming words, friendship, and baskets of food and treats to more than six million GIs by the time the war ended.

In this poignant and heartwarming eyewitness history, based on interviews with North Platte residents and the soldiers who once passed through, Bob Greene tells a classic, lost-in-the-mists-of-time American story of a grateful country honoring its brave and dedicated sons.

Children’s Book Sale May 7th-12th at the Library!

In celebration of “Children’s Book Week“, the library is having a book sale May 7th-12th.  New books will be available to purchase for $5, to donate to the library or for the purchase for a favorite child. 🙂  Our goal is to have at least 100 books purchased.

Special sales prices are being provided by Duane Munson (a book publisher representative and advocate of children’s literacy and reading).  Thanks Duane! 🙂

Next “Gardening Throughout the Year” Class is Thursday, April 19th at 7:00 PM!

The next “Gardening Throughout the Year” class is this Thursday, April 19th at 7:00 p.m. in the library meeting room.  This month’s topic is “Unusual Food Plants for Your Garden”.  Luddene Perry will be covering topics such as:  *What are honeyberries, seaberries and pawpaws? *Unknown tasty vegetables  *Perennial plants vs annuals There is no cost for the class.  Everyone is welcome!

Congratulations to our “Space Trivia” Winners!

Participants from the Central City Elementary and Nebraska Christian schools, recently had the chance to participate in a “Space”  trivia contest.  The first few who answered the questions correctly and returned the forms to the library, were the happy recipients of gift cards to Dairy Queen!  Stay tuned for more “Space” information at a later date….. 🙂

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK IS APRIL 8TH-14TH!

Library Events

In celebration of National Library Week, April 8th-14th, the library will have an “Amnesty Week” to encourage patrons to return their overdue library items.  To participate, we are asking that patrons return their overdue items, along with a canned or non- perishable food item for each overdue item.  Have an existing fine on your account?  Patrons that owe existing fines for previously returned items may have a chance to reduce their debt owed by 50% during the week, by bringing in a food item to donate for each existing fine.  Food donations are welcome even if no fines are owed.  All food items collected will be donated to the local food pantry.

Tuesday, April 10th, will be “Tea Tuesday”.  We will offer tea and refreshments for those who stop by between 1:00 and 4:00 that afternoon.

Patrons may also stop by throughout the week, to sign up for a prize drawing to win a gift basket.  The gift basket includes:  a hardcover book on the current “New York Times Best Sellers List” (“Lone Wolf” by Jodi Picoult), a Central City Public Library keepsake mug, some delicious snack food, and a bookmark!
