Hooper Public Library welcomed Henry Doorly Zoo to Hooper on June 6th. They presented ZOOLYMPICS to help kick off Hooper Public Library’s summer reading program. Children were able to test their abilities against that of some animals and learned new facts about a few of their favorite animals.
The summer reading program titled ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, READ! continued at the library the rest of the week with Preschoolers coming on Tuesday morning for story time and fun activities. The older children came for afternoon sessions all week learning about the library & why it is important to keep reading throughout the summer. Each day had a different theme: STORY DAY, GAME DAY, CRAFT DAY & ACTIVITY DAY. Children heard stories about camping and made S’mores snack mix that everyone enjoyed. Games like Hangman, Book Sandwich, & Mad Libs were a big hit. They made “watermelon fans” to cool themselves with on these hot summer days, a READ paper chain to decorate the library with, cute magnets to take home and the preschoolers made a 3-D camping picture. Children played library games and learned how books are shelved in the library. They were also introduced to Nebraska Overdrive and learned how to check out a book on an I PAD. The last day was full of fun activities that got the children up and moving. They played with punch balls, had pull back car races, and tried out some bouncing putty, all of which they got to take home with them. Everyone also received a READ bag, bookmarks and a “playbook” with fun activity ideas to do the rest of the summer.
Children who are reading on their own were offered the chance to take part in our BOOK CAMP going on the rest of the summer. This is open to all Hooper Public Library patrons so bring your child in to see how he or she can earn prizes for reading this summer!
