Hooper Public Library Participates in National Gaming Day 2011

National Gaming Day @ your library is an initiative of the American Library Association to reconnect communities through their libraries around the educational, recreational, and social value of all types of games.
In the 21st century, libraries are about much more than books. On Saturday, November 12, 2011, more than one thousand libraries throughout the country will showcase gaming programs and services in support of NGD11. This year marks our fourth annual event. In 2010, more than 26,000 people played games at more than 1,800 libraries across the U.S. and in other countries.
Gaming of all types at the library encourages young patrons to interact with a diverse group of peers, share their expertise with others (including adults), and develop new strategies for gaming and learning. Plus, it’s a way for traditionally underserved groups to have fun in the library and interact with other members of the community. Gaming Day is a great opportunity for families to get out of the house and play together in the one community institution that welcomes everyone.
In addition, ALA partners with donors to provide free copies of board and tabletop games for libraries across the country. Past donors have included companies such as AlphaBound, Hasbro, North Star Games, and Wizards of the Coast. This yearFamilyAndPartyGames.com and DEMCO are official sponsors supporting libraries participating in NGD11.
Hooper Public Library is one of only 10 libraries in Nebraska to participate in NGD11.
Saturday, November 12th Hooper Public Library will be hosting this event from 10:00a.m.-Noon. Plan to attend with your family, play some old favorites like Cribbage, Checkers, Mancala, Hangman, Battleship and Sorry. Try out some new board games donated to our library by one of the sponsors of NGD11, FamilyandPartyGames.com. These include Awkward Family Photos, The Greatest Day Ever, Loaded Questions and Loaded Questions Jr. We will also have video games available to play on the Wii or Playstation II. It will be great fun for children and adults alike so bring the whole family!

Pay it Forward!

We are hoping to fill the space beneath our Christmas tree at the Library.  With your help we think we can do it!  Here’s how:

The Hooper Public Library is sponsoring a Food Drive for the Holiday Season.  Now through Christmas Eve bring in a donation of a canned or boxed non-perishable food item and if you happen to have a fine due at the Library we will forgive that fine!   If you don’t have a fine due you may choose from our selection of used books as a Thank-you for your contribution.

We are also hoping to put new books into the hands of children for Christmas.  Bring in a NEW unwrapped children or teen book, or purchase one from our new selection, and we will gift wrap it and indicate the appropriate age level.  The library will not profit on books sold for the drive and all donations will go to the Faith Food Pantry for distribution to families in need.

There’s nothing like your very own brand-new book!  Let’s put many smiles on the faces of children this Christmas by giving the gift of reading!

We are also excited to be participating in the Main Street Extravaganza going on Sunday December 5th in Hooper. You can bring contributions that day as well.  Be sure to join us at the Library at 4:00 for crafts, story time with Mrs. Claus and then a visit from Santa Claus!  If you don’t have a library card and would like to sign up for one, we will be on hand to help you with that as well.  There will be many other fun things going on that evening so watch for details!

What's Happening at your Library

A lot has been happening at the Library but it’s been “behind the scenes” so to speak.  I have done a lot of cleaning and rearranging and Lois & Kay continue to help me work on the newly acquired books.  We literally have hundreds of donated books and over 50 new books that have to be processed before they will be available for check out.

We are preparing to add some new programs and bring back some that had been in place before.  We want to try to make things happen when it works for patrons so I will be giving local students a chance to fill out a survey.   This will help me know what they might be interested in as well as what day of the week works best.   Parents  please watch for that to come home with them from school as your input is appreciated.

The Bookenders Book Club continues to meet the 3rd Monday of each month-Call for details!

Upcoming Adult & Preschool programs will likely be on Friday mornings-watch for more information to come!
