‘Twas The Night…

‘Twas a night in December and all through the house,
Every creature was reading, even the mouse.
The stockings were hung, just waiting to be filled,
With books about puppies and neat things to build.

The youngest children were tucked in their beds,
While visions from storybooks danced in their heads.
Grandpa was reading to his sleepy grandson,
A Christmas Carol – his favorite! What fun!

Off to the library – a new book to select,
One filled with poems or bright pictures to inspect.
In the kitchen they read a recipe book,
Looking for some  holiday dishes to cook.

Grandma stood in the doorway singing carols to all,
As outside the snowflakes began to fall.
Aunt Betty and Uncle Jack were already in bed.
Aunt Betty was sleeping while Uncle Jack read.

Under the tree, wrapped in holiday paper,
Were  biographies, novels and mystery capers.
In the family room Uncle Bob had a tale to tell,
With  his nieces and nephews under his spell.

As the fire started fading, Mother read over her list,
Checking every name, making sure no one was missed.
And as the night came to an end,
With everyone in great cheer,
Father read to himself and thought,

“What a wonderful year!”
