Solar glasses are the only glasses that are safe to view the sun. Sunglasses or smoked glasses are not ok.
These glasses make it safe to look at the sun at any time, not just during an eclipse.
SAFETY FACT: Check your glasses over before using them. You don’t want any scratches on the lens (makes them unsafe). You shouldn’t be able to see anything through the glasses except the sun. If you can see anything besides the sun, throw them away.
An eclipse of the sun occurs when the Moon moves between the Sun and the Earth blocking some of the sun or all of it. The sun is bigger than the moon, but the sun is much farther away so the moon can block the sight of the sun. When the two lines up exactly we have a “total” eclipse. If the line-up is not exact you experience a “partial” eclipse.
If you want a pair of glasses you can pick them up at the library. If it is cloudy or you don’t have any of the glasses you can view the total eclipse at: exploratorium.edu/eclipse.
