Library Awarded Children’s Books From The Libri Foundation

Library Receives 83 New Children’s Books from BOOKS FOR CHILDREN Libri Grant

Our letter started out – “The Libri Foundation is pleased to announce your library has been awarded a special non-matching BOOKS FOR CHILDREN grant for libraries thanks to a generous and anonymous donation.” (Usually we would have a $350.00 match)

Our library was able to select $1,050.00 worth of new, hardcover,(many award winning) children’s books from the Foundation’s booklist of over 600 books. On top of the books from the booklist we also received 20 math and science books for a total of 83 books. The math and science collection was donated by Bill Strawbridge and Meg Wallhagen and the Libri Foundation. The book “Women Astronomers: Reaching for the Stars” was donated by the author, Mabel Armstrong. These books are grouped young listeners; preschool to 2nd grade, and intermediate readers; grades 3rd to 6th.

The Libri Foundation was established in 1989 in Eugene, Oregon for the purpose of giving quality books to small rural libraries across the United States. The rural town library should serve a population of under 10,000 (usually under 5,000). They must have an active children’s department, a limited operating budget, and not be close to a city with a population over 40,000.

We are just finishing up getting them into the computer and ready to check out. These books will be in a display for the next month or so and any of the books may be checked out.

Last Week of Reading

P1010023The Librarians have been ahead of Scruffy and Tater for the last 4 weeks, so we gave them one last chance to beat us.  One week, winner take all.  We  did not intend to lose and told them so. If they wanted to win they were going to have to read, and they did just that.  The last week ended up Scruffy and Tater had 6,643 minutes to the librarians 3,915 minutes.  The children read just over 547 hours in 5 weeks.

Making Quilts

P1010021 P1010020 P1010019The group were putting together wallpaper quilts this week.  Each child in the 1st -6th grade started with a sheet that showed the pattern made up of  108 pieces.  They then picked out the colors they wanted and designed their blocks.  The finished ones are at the library for you to see.

Third Week of Races

3rd week

3rd week

This is the 3rd week of reading and the Librarians are still ahead. Rover has read a total of  14,410 mins.  Scruffy read a total of  10,451 mins and Tater read a total of 7,980 mins.  We thought we might lose this week because a lot of extra minutes came in, but not enough.  Two more weeks to try and catch up.

Second Week of Our Race

P1010018 This week the Librarians are still  in the lead. We can’t believe it.   Rover’s team (gray dog) have a total of 10,775 mins.  Second place is Scruffy’s team (yellow dog) with a total of 7, 316 mins., and running as hard as he can is  Tater’s team (white dog) with a total of 5,710 mins.  There are still  3 more weeks of reading.

The Race is On.

P1010016The librarians are reading against the children.  This week the Librarians are in the lead.  Rover’s team (Gray dog) read 6,415 mins.  Second place is Scruffy’s team (yellow dog) with 3, 123 mins., and bringing up the rear is  Tater’s team (white dog) with 2, 727 mins.  A lot of the children haven’t turned in their reading records yet so race isn’t over yet.  4 more weeks of reading.
