Reading Goals

Each age group has different daily reading goals.

  • Pre-K to 4th Grade children have a goal of 15 minutes per day.
  • 5th Grade to 12th Grade children have a goal of 30 minutes per day.
  • Adults have a goal of 60 minutes per day.

Please note that these goals are just a guideline and NOT a requirement to participate in the program. Any amount of daily reading is a great benefit to both kids and adults.

Prizes

We are bringing back our beloved prize box for 2021! Kids who are actively participating in the program are invited to choose one small toy from the box each week.

We are also giving away grand prizes at the end of the program! To be eligible, readers must log at least 500 total minutes to be eligible for these prizes. Winners will be randomly chosen out of the pool of eligible readers.

One winner in each age category will receive a Kindle Fire tablet! Smaller (but equally awesome) prizes include reading lights, craft kits, and books.

Eric Carle Story Time

We were saddened to hear of the passing of famous children’s author and illustrator, Eric Carle. He was 91 years old. His most famous book is the beloved “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” which was published in 1967! He was renowned for his bright, cheerful illustrations. This week, we are honoring him by reading a couple of his stories.

For our craft, we are including a link to an entire list of Eric Carle crafts. Children will have a blast recreating their favorite characters from his stories.

Memorial Day Story Time

This week, we are celebrating Memorial Day with a couple stories about the holiday. Memorial Day is a long weekend that is sometimes referred to as the official start of summer in the United States. We celebrate this day to remember our fallen soldiers.

For our craft this week, we have a link to a bunch of fun Memorial Day crafts you can try at home!

Grumpy Story Time

Have you ever felt grumpy? Other words for being grumpy are grouchy or crabby. It’s a perfectly normal emotion, but it is important to know where it comes from and how to handle it. Today we are reading a couple stories about being grumpy!

For our craft, we have a cute coloring page so you can make your own Grouchy Ladybug. You can print it at home or get a copy here at the library. Be sure to give him some angry eyebrows so he looks EXTRA GROUCHY!

Rainy Day Story Time

Are you staying dry? At the library, we like to say that days like this are “good reading weather.” This week, we are sharing a couple selections from Junior Library Guild. This company sends a handpicked picture book to the library every month and we always love what comes in the mail.

This week, we are offering a variety of craft kits for pick up at the library! We have many odds and ends saved from different in-person story times, past Summer Reading Programs, and other events. Come pick up a kit or two and make something fun!

Soupy Story Time

This week, we are reading stories about soup! What is your favorite soup?

We are excited that Miss Linda joined us to read a story this week. She was a little nervous about reading on camera, so be sure to tell her you liked her story if you see her. We think she did an awesome job!

Check out the stories below and then take a look at the recipe for Mexicali soup we have shared. It cooks in one pot and it is easy enough that parents can have some “little helpers” assist in making the soup. This recipe is very mild, too!

Get Caught Reading Month

May is Get Caught Reading Month! This nationwide public service campaign was founded by the Association of American Publishers in 1999 and aims to raise awareness about the joy of reading.

We are celebrating with some fun activities. If you “get caught” reading in the library during the month of May, your picture might be featured on our Facebook and website! We also have a coloring sheet that can be picked up at the library or printed here.
