Gilbert Public Library

The library was built at a cost of $8,000.00 and was presented to the people of Friend by its donator, Mr. J.W. Gilbert on May 11, 1916.  A thousand people gathered in front of the building to hear the band music and the address.  When Mr. Gilbert appeared, the crowd immediately gave him their attention in an effort to get every word that he had to say.  He made a few historical remarks and told the young people that his hope was that they will take advantage of this gift to enrich their minds.  In closing he said:  “Mr. Mayor unlock those doors, throw them open, the library belongs to the people.”

The library is located at 628 2nd Street in its original building and has approximately 7.949 holdings including adult books, children’s books, audio books, VHS and DVD’s 3 newspapers arriving weekly, 30 magazine subscriptions, 2 desktop computers, 1 lap top computer, and a copy/fax machine available for public use.  We also have Interlibrary Loan and NebrasKard services available to our patrons.
