Happy Valentine’s Day!

💝I had a great turn out at the annual Valentines Day party yesterday!💘
(We had it on the 13th due to today being Ash Wednesday also.)
💓We played the Mend a Broken Heart game, we had an assembly line to put together treat bags to take home, we had a heart candy stacking contest, after which the kids could eat their candy while enjoying our story titled “GROUNDHUG DAY” By Anna Marie Pace. In the story the animals made shadow puppets so we did some of that after decorating & eating our Valentine’s Day cookies.💓

Bird & Wildlife Photo Exhibit coming to Hooper Public Library

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Hooper Public Library!  We have a great way to start off 2018.  We will be hosting a photo exhibit titled “Fenceline Photos” right here in our library for the months of January and February.

Come see 40 bird and wildlife photos captured by birdwatcher and photographer Stanley Buman of Carroll, Iowa.

Get to know the greater prairie chicken, piping plover, bufflehead, dowitcher, dickcissel and sedge wren, along with more familiar species of hawks, owl, sparrows, swallows and geese.  Most photos were taken in Iowa but a few are from pastures further west including Winnetoon, NE. and ocean coasts.

Stanley Buman, who is also passionate about restoring old tractors, is one of the founders of Agren, an agri-business firm in Carroll, Iowa.

Hooper Public Library is located at 126 N. Main St. Hooper NE. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular open hours starting in January.

Tue-Thur. 2:00-6:00p.m. and Fri & Sat. 9:00a.m.-1:00p.m.  For more information call us at the library 402-654-3833.

Happening at HPL

Time flies when you’re having fun! Last week marked my 7th anniversary as Director & Librarian here. Lois & Kay are still my trusty substitutes and keep things running smoothly when I am not here.

Our Board of Trustees consists of 5 members of our community and they recently elected officers.

Michael Mattes serves as president, Sally Oberg is vice president & Jamie Volpp is our board secretary. Anne Skidmore & Kelly Abrahams also serve as trustees.

Recently the board & I were able to accomplish a goal we have had for quite some time.  We purchased a new awning for the front of the building and it looks great!

On Halloween I greeted 80 trick or treaters and the adults who accompanied them.  It was busy fun night but I did manage to snap a few pictures of the cute costumes that came through.

The holidays are fast approaching now and we will have Mrs. Santa Claus story time again this year at the Main Street  Extravaganza so watch for details on that!

If you don’t have a library card here stop in and get one today!  In addition to books, magazines & movies you can check out,  Hooper Public library offers many services including, Nebraska Overdrive, free Wi-Fi, computers for patron use, copies, die cut, meeting room use & inter library loan.

Stop in and check it out!

Work begins for our new awning!

A big thank you to George and his crew from the City of Hooper for removing the old awning in preparation for the new one to be installed next week.  We are excited about this as it has been a goal of the library board and mine to get this replaced for some time now.

Hooper Public Library’s summer reading program was held June 6-9 this year.  Our theme, BUILD A BETTER WORLD focused on some of the things we can do in our world to make it a better place. We had wonderful programs this year provided by Academy Science from Valley and The Nebraska Extension Office from Fremont.

Day 1 of our Summer Reading Program was so much fun! With help from Kathy & Michael of Academy Science, we all made rockets and got to launch them outside. 🚀

Day 2 of SRP had the children building “planters” like the kind you pull behind a tractor. They had fun engineering different designs and trying them out. Thank you to Emily & Karna from the Nebraska Extension Office for teaching the kids some fun facts about soil.

Day 3 at SRP was another fun one for our little “engineers”. Emily read a fun book titled “The True Story of the Three Little Pigs” by Jon Scieszka. She gave the children a lesson in building and they designed paper bridges & stick houses to see what design could withstand more weight or wind.

We had a small group but our last day of Summer Reading Program was full of fun! The children heard a great story titled THE FORT ON FOURTH STREET. It was about using simple machines to build a fort. Before the story children got to tell their favorite part of the week and “punch a prize”, they personalized reading journals that they got to take home, and each child designed their own Lego creation that we put in the window on display.😊 Each child also took home a treat bag along with a bookmark promoting our Nebraska Overdrive program.
It was a great week at HPL!

There will be more fun summer activities coming up. Please watch our Facebook page for more details. Happy Summer Reading to all!
