SELS Training Extravaganza to be May 8 in Seward! (Cancelled due to COVID-19)

The 2020 SELS Training Extravaganza will be held on May 8 at Seward Memorial Library from 9:30 – 3:00. We are excited to announce Dean Jacobs will be our keynote speaker and will speak on the topic 7 Wonders – 7 Lessons: Reasons to Have Hope in the World. We live in a world that is filled with negative news and conversations that rob the oxygen of our curiosity to be engaged in the world. Exploring 58 countries taught Dean some valuable lessons, including that the world is far more kind, generous, and beautiful than what it is given credit. Dean says that making the world a better place begins with ourselves and the story we wish to create to do so.

This Keynote is sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Nebraska Library Commission.

Library websites and social media platforms are always more effective with a good advertising image and a catchy title. Copyright can make it difficult to find and use images for free online. This session will dive into how to use Canva to design and build our own images that can be used to spice up our advertising. Together, we will run through examples of amazing advertising we have encountered in the past, then look at why that advertising works. When we know what works, we will dive into Canva itself and start building our own. Get hands-on experience to improve your marketing game in your library! Additional resources and free tools will be provided.

“Imagine Your Story” at Syracuse Public Library

We are holding our second Summer Reading Workshop at Syracuse Public Library on March 13 from 10 am to 3:15 pm. The workshop will be free and will be worth 4 CE.

Presentations will include: 1. Fairy Tales, Legends, Myths, Oh My!  Hear About New Titles 2. Imagination Stations: Tween Programming for Summer Reading 2020 3. Activities to Fire Up Imagination in Children 4. Summer Crafts Sampler and 5. Outreach and School Partnerships.

Summer Reading Program 2020 Workshops

The slogan for Summer 2020’s summer reading programs will be “Imagine Your Story” and will be based of the theme of Fairy Tales/Mythology/Fantasy. To help library staff prepare, we will be offering two workshops this year. Last year we filled the room at the Walt Branch Library, so we decided to add a second one at Syracuse Public Library. The content will be identical, or nearly identical, at both workshops.


The workshops will be free and worth 4 CE. They will contain presentations on 1. Fairy Tales, Legends, Myths, Oh My!  Hear About New Titles  2. Beyond an Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information at Your Library

This hands-on class will cover the health information seeking behavior of consumers and the role of the librarian in the provision of health information for the public. Come learn about the evolution of consumer health, health literacy and the e-patient. Participants will leave equipped with knowledge of top consumer health sites. We will discuss creative ideas for health information outreach. The class will wrap up with an opportunity to explore effective marketing approaches and develop an elevator speech.

Building and Maintaining Your Library Website with WordPress

On Friday, September 13, we will be hosting two WordPress Workshops at Seward Memorial Library from 9am-12pm and 1-4 pm. Our instructor is Amanda Sweet from the Nebraska Library Commission.


This workshop will be a mixture of instruction and hands-on practice. For those who do not already have WordPress accounts, dummy accounts will be provided. Both beginners and those looking for a refresher are welcome. Right now the afternoon session is already full, but there are spots left in the morning session. Time to Register for the 25th Joint Annual Youth Services Retreat!

This year’s retreat will bring us to a quarter century of this wonderful and enriching event for youth services librarians!


The retreat will again be held at Camp Carol Joy Holling near Ashland, Nebraska. The dates are August 29-30 and the prices have remained the same as last year. 11 CE are available for attendance at both days.

School Librarians in the Digital Age in Lincoln on June 7

For the fourth year in a row, “School Librarians in the Digital Age” will be cosponsored by the Nebraska School Librarians Association and SELS. This year the location will be Room 101 at the new Don Clifton Professional Learning Center. Address: 710 Hill Street, Lincoln, NE. The room will open for registrants at 8:45 am, the event will begin at 9:00 am, and we will be done by 12:00 pm.
