- New Times, New Roles, New Structures – Presentation on April 7
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln Libraries invites members of the campus to attend its 2015 Visiting Scholar lecture on April 7, at 10:30 a.m., in the Georgian Room, Nebraska Union. The lecture will be given by Trevor A. Dawes, associate university librarian at Washington University in St. Louis, and past president of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), who will discuss the new and expanded roles that librarians are assuming. In addition there will be a panel discussion from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in Love Library, Room 110. Trevor Dawes, along with several Nebraska academic librarians, will discuss recent changes that have taken place at their libraries. Both the presentation and panel discussions are free and open to the public.
Dawes will talk about the ARL study, Transforming Liaison Roles in Research Libraries (2013) (http://www.arl.org/publications-resources/2893-new-roles-for-new-times-transforming-liaison-roles-in-research-libraries#.VOzb9Y3wuUk), which indicates changes in the role of the liaison librarian from someone who develops the collection, staffs a reference desk, and conducts instruction sessions, to a role that meets the changing needs of faculty and students in an academic environment.
As Associate University Librarian at Washington University in St. Louis, Dawes is responsible for research services, scholarly communications, collections and acquisitions, and preservation. Prior appointments include Circulation Services Director at Princeton University Library and positions at Columbia University Libraries in New York City. He has authored, co-authored, or edited several books and articles on a variety of topics in connection with academic libraries. Dawes also serves as an instructor for the MSLIS program at the iSchool at Drexel University. Dawes earned his MLS from Rutgers University and has two additional Master’s Degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.
- Central Community College – Registration opens on April 10, 2015 for classes in Library and Information Services (LIS).
The program is online and students may opt to pursue an Associate’s Degree in LIS or complete a certificate program.

– Fall Classes: 1) Foundations in Library and Information Services 2) Leadership and Management in Library and Information Agencies and the 3) Library and Information Services Capstone Practicum.

- The 2015 Nebraska Book Festival, April 25 at the University of Nebraska Omaha’s Weitz Community Engagement Center, will feature ten Nebraska authors. Public admission is free.
The festival begins at 9:30 a.m. with writing workshops. Workshop seating is limited and early arrival is recommended. Advance registration is not necessary.
Readings, book sales, and book signings will take place from noon to 3:30 p.m. Authors will read and discuss their work, allowing time for questions. Scheduled authors include:
– Mark Langan, Busting Bad Guys: My True Crime Stories of Bookies, Drug Dealers and Ladies of the Night
– Marsha Davis, One Man’s Voice
– Sydney Olson, The Curse of the Fates
– John Price, The Tallgrass Prairie Reader
– Timothy Schaffert, The Swan Gondola: A Novel
– Karen Shoemaker, The Meaning of Names
Prior to a 3:45 p.m. reception, the Nebraska Center for the Book will announce the 2015 recipient of the Mildred Bennett Award, recognizing an individual who has made significant contributions to fostering literary tradition in Nebraska.
The festival concludes, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with the NeBooks Project Student & Teacher Showcase.
The Bookworm and University of Nebraska Press will offer books by Nebraska authors for sale throughout the event. The Nebraska Book Festival is presented by the Nebraska Center for the Book, Humanities Nebraska, and Nebraska Library Commission.
