Plainview Library’s Internet Policy

Purpose

In accordance with its mission to support the cultural, educational and recreational needs of the community, the Plainview Library offers Internet access for all the citizens of the library’s service area.

Policy

Internet access will be available whenever the library is open, on a first-come, first-served basis.

All users must sign the log-in sheet prior to beginning their session.

Misuse of the computer or internet access will result in loss of your computer privileges. 

Unacceptable purposes include, but are not limited to the following:

•             Destruction or damage to equipment, software, or data belonging to the library.
•             Unauthorized monitoring (or disruption of) electronic communications.
•             Unauthorized use or destruction of data of other users.
•             Unauthorized copying of copyright-protected data.
•             Harassing, libeling, or slandering other users.
•             Unauthorized changes to the set-up or configuration of the library’s computer software or hardware.

The responsibility for and any restriction of a child’s use of the internet rests solely with his or her parents or legal guardians.  The librarian does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed through the internet.  Children who use the internet unsupervised may be exposed to inappropriate or disturbing information and images.  Parent/guardians are encouraged to discuss the use of the internet in relation to family values and boundaries with their children and to monitor and supervise their children’s use of the internet.

Plainview Library assumes no responsibility for any damages, direct or indirect, arising from its connection to the internet.  The library makes no guarantees, either expressed or implied with respect to the quality of content of the information available on the internet.  Not all the information available via the internet is accurate, current, or complete.  Users are encouraged to be good information consumers by evaluating the validity of information accessed via the internet.

Although we have virus software on the computers at the Library, this will not completely protect you from the chance of getting a virus.  The Plainview Library is not responsible for damage to a patron’s disk or computer, or for loss of data, damage, or liability that may occur from patron use of library’s computer. 

We limit 30 minutes for use of the computer unless it is used for research then more time is allowed if needed.
