The Alec Smarts of 1922
After last week’s scandal, the November 30th issue of the Sargent Leader in 1922 lamented another problem of the youth in Sargent. Apparently, a gang of young boys was yelling insulting remarks at passersby, striking some ladies, and being little thieves.
“We will not be surprised to hear of some of these little Alec Smarts sent sprawling to the sidewalk.”
Open House to Show New Children’s Books
Recently the Sargent library received a grant to purchase new books for our children’s non-fiction section. Even though these are non-fiction, all of the books are in a colorful graphic novel (comic book) format. Subjects range from science, technology, animals, math, and history. These are classified as “children’s books”, but many adults will also find them engaging.
We invite you to come to the library for our open house on March 19th from 10:00 a.m. till Noon. You can look through the books and see why kids are excited about them.

Entertaining Math Books
“Math” & “Entertaining”, – Do those words belong together??? Thanks to a grant, our library is able to purchase a number of books for children that promote STEM learning. Our newest purchase is the “Sir Cumference” series.
Each book is well illustrated and tells a fictional story about the adventures of Sir Cumference, his wife Lady Di of Ameter, and their son Radius. A different math concept is introduced in each story, which helps children see how math can be useful and fun. This is a series of eleven books, and all but one is on Accelerated Reader.
(I’ll let you in on a secret: I’m 59 years old, and I enjoyed reading some of the books. I may have even learned a few things. 😉 )

One more reason to love your library – no late fees
Did you know that the Sargent Library doesn’t charge late book fines? When someone checks out a book, it is stamped with a due date of two weeks. However, if you forget to bring it back or need extra time to finish it, that isn’t a problem.
I do appreciate it if you let me know when it is checked out, that you will need extra time. Otherwise, if the book is late, I may contact you to remind you to return it, but there is no fine. Happy Reading!
100 Years ago – The controversial hot lunch in schools
One hundred years ago, the idea of a hot lunch in school was controversial. Some of the parents felt it was a new-fangled idea and most unnecessary. Some of the teachers complained that they didn’t have time to prepare the lunch. Wait, what? . . . The teachers had to prepare the lunch?????

Art ~just for fun~ by Cindi Holmes
Our library is pleased to be able to host a series of art workshops by Cindi Holmes. This is totally for fun and no experience is necessary. There is a limit of 4-5 people per class, so be sure to give Cindi a call at 308-380-0862 if you are interested. The cost is $10 per class.

Custer County Reads
Everyone is invited to participate in the first annual Custer County Reads. This is a collaborative program among four public libraries and the Broken Bow Area Rotary in Custer County. The goal is community building through shared conversation. We hope to get everyone in Custer County to come together and read the same great book – “Wild Land” by Rebecca Hodge. There will also be Zoom events throughout the upcoming months that are related to the book.
We have multiple copies available at the Sargent Library, so come in and check one out. Our final Zoom session will be on May 17th when we will discuss the book with the author.
We have the fastest internet speed in the City of Sargent
The Sargent Library has recently upgraded to the fasted internet speed available for this area. Our download speed is now 50mbps (twice the local average speed), and our upload speed is 50mbps (10 times the local average speed)! We have obtained this upgrade due to a Cares Act Grant that will continue through May 31, 2021.
We hope our patrons enjoy the faster speed. You can come in to the library and use one of our computers, or you can access our free WiFi from your car parked outside. Your feedback will be needed for us to know if we should continue the faster speed after the grant period ends. Your feedback can be as simple as a quick note saying “I like it.”

Sargent Newspapers are back online!
Great news! The Sargent newspapers are now back online and searchable! http://sargentleaderne.advantage-preservation.com/
This archive contains all of the newspapers up through the year 2004. Advantage Archives are currently working on digitizing the newspapers up through 2011. With an additional $570 in donations, we will be able to update our archive to the year 2019. If you would like to donate, you can do so online, or mail to:
