A New Book Set of a Classic Title

Old Yeller by Fred Gipson — 18 copies (Grades 3-6)
When his father sets out on a cattle drive toward Kansas for the summer, fourteen-year-old Travis Coates is left to take care of his family and their farm. Living in Texas Hill Country during the 1860s, Travis comes to face new, unanticipated, and often perilous responsibilities in the frontier wilderness. A particular nuisance is a stray yellow dog that shows up one day and steals food from the family. But the big canine who Travis calls “Old Yeller” proves his worth by defending the family from danger. And Travis ultimately finds help and comfort in the courage and unwavering love of the dog who comes to be his very best friend.

Reluctant Readers Workshop

Librarians love to put books in children’s hands and share the joy of reading. But… what do we do if they don’t want our books? What do we do if they don’t enjoy reading? Given the life-long impact of reading and literacy, these questions are worthy of our time.

Join Erica Rose as she examines the definition of “reluctant readers” and offers alternative terminology and approaches for working with this group. The discussion will explore opportunities for librarians to inspire, encourage, and engage with every type of reader in ways that remove barriers and break the mold. Titles, formats, and engagement strategies are all included as key pieces of the puzzle and audience ideas, questions, and experiences are always a welcome addition.

S.T.E.A.M.-ing Through 2021

February is over, but we received such a terrific response to our Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead program last month, we decided to keep the fun going.

And now (drumroll please), we are going to email out an activity that is appropriate for elementary-age children on the 15th of each month throughout 2021! In addition, we will email out a teen activity on the last Friday of each month for the remainder of the year! Supplies will be available for these projects, too!

Call or email the System Office to let us know how many children you expect at your program.

Remember, you can request supplies for any of the 20 activities from February through the end of the year. All the projects can be found on our website.

Our elementary project for March is to do Bubble Prints.

Watch the linked video for complete details.
