Help Documents for New Catalog

These two PDF’s will help you navigate searching for items and managing your own account on our new interface.

A couple of notes:

-Once in your account you will be able to choose how you want the library to interact with you when notifying you of overdue items and holds. You can now choose to be notified via text, email, or phone call. The way I understand it you will also be able to text back to the system and a staff member can respond via text to you. You should also choose if you want your reading history saved or deleted and how many years you want it saved.

-The new system is connected with our OverDrive system. This is good because it means OverDrive holdings will show up in our catalog so you do not have to search two places at once. BUT this also means if your account is blocked for any reason, you will also be blocked on OverDrive until your account is cleared.

-For those of you that use Nebraskard you can now search the Kilgore Memorial Library right from our catalog. Look for the “Search Other Libraries” on the top left.

As staff learns the new system we will continue to provide you with more information about your capabilities within the system.

George Flippin Day at the Library

I first heard about George Flippin when I was working as a para in Mrs. DeMers 4th grade class at Cross County. As part of their Nebraska unit, Kathy came out and did her presentation about George.

Since then, I’ve heard much about George Flippin. I am guilty of what Kathy refers to as the “eye glaze” sometimes when listening to more about George Flippin. I have not read the book, but have talked with Kathy many times during her writing and researching. I’m no expert, but I can give you the basics about George Flippin at least. Saturday, we celebrated George Flippin Day at the Stromsburg Public Library and I have to say, while listening to the speakers, my whole perspective changed. I’ve only ever thought of George in his context to this town. He was a doctor. He owned a chicken farm. He won shooting contests. He was arrested for voting in an election. He did not own the first car in Stromsburg.

Archive unit

It wasn’t until Larry Britt, board member for the Nebraska Black Sports Hall of Fame, spoke of how George Flippin’s determination to be educated opened doors for other young black men to be educated that I began to see him in a more complete way. Larry, and later, Preston Love, former UNL football player, both mentioned that because George broke the color barrier, other young black men had opportunities no one before them had.

Larry Britt

It wasn’t until George’s great-great nephew, Gordon Harrod, spoke of George Flippin’s civil rights activities outside of Stromsburg that I saw him as an activist for his time. It wasn’t until Gordon read the words that the Friends of the Stromsburg Public Library had printed and hung above the archive unit in their entirety and gave the context of the speech, that I realized that a black man spoke words over half a century ago that still apply today. It really reminded me how long this struggle to “Recognize the majesty of the mind and not the color of the face” has gone on and wonder if we’ve made any progress.

Gordon Harrod

George Flippin did many things that no matter the color of his skin would still have made him memorable. It’s the fact that he did all these things and never thought of letting the color of his skin stop him that made him remarkable.

New items at the library include, “The Prisoner” by Alex Berenson, “Wicked City by Beatriz Williams, “Lost City of the Monkey God” by Douglas Preston, “Kings Cage” by Victoria Aveyard, “A Book of American Martyrs” by Joyce Carol Oates, “What to Do With a Box” by Jane Yolen and Chris Sheban and “NOPE!” by Drew Sheneman.

iPad Training and New Front-Line Tech Support on OverDrive

Tuesday, February 4, 2014 the library staff will be offering free iPad training. The main purpose of this training is to help patrons set up their device to access OverDrive, a free online ebook and audiobook checkout system available through the library. We will answer questions and provide support as much as we can outside of OverDrive also.

New to OverDrive is FrontLine Tech Support. This is another layer of support and help available to our patrons when they are having questions about OverDrive. If your question hasn’t been answered in the “Help” section of OverDrive and the librarians are unavailable or unable to help you, you can turn to FrontLine Tech Support right on OverDrive. Simply click the “Help” button or if you are already in the help section, scroll to the bottom of the page to “Support”. When you click on “Support” this will take you right to a FrontLine.

*A Reminder: OverDrive will now be requesting a library specific password to help prevent patrons from checking out books on another library’s patron card. This is not listed as a password, but rather, OverDrive requests a PIN in addition to your library card number. If you do not know this password, please stop by the library to obtain it.

Any other questions? Please contact the library staff at 402-764-7681.

Free Magazines at the Stromsburg Library

It’s that time of year again, time to cut the clutter and get organized. One way we do this at the library is to get rid of magazines that are 2 years old or older in some cases. Gone are the days of doing a research paper using the Reader’s Guide to Periodicals! (Anyone remember those?) So goes the need to keep magazines around for five or ten years. The library typically keeps back issues of our magazines for one year. Some magazines are held longer due to content that might be relevant in the coming years.

The magazines are free for the taking and are available on the large table in the center of the library. Take as many as you want!

Red Carpet Reads at the Library

CAM01115 (755x1024) (590x800)Before you head to the theater to see “Ender’s Game” or “Catching Fire” this month or before your teenager talks you into buying and watching the upcoming DVD releases of  “Sea of Monsters” or “City of Bones”, why not stop by the library and read the book first?

The library has put together a display of “Red Carpet Reads” using books that have been made into movies. You might be surprised at what you find!

Earn an “A” with the Stromsburg Public Library

School starts this week and the Stromsburg Public Library is here to help all your students have a great year!

Any student of Cross County Community Schools is eligible for a library card at the Stromsburg Public Library whether they live in Polk county or York county. All residents of Polk county are eligible for a library card at any of our four county libraries; Polk County Library, Stromsburg Public Library, Osceola Public Library and Shelby Community Library.

The Stromsburg Public Library librarians are available to come talk to any class or organization and demonstrate all of our online resources, including how to renew books or put an item on hold from home! Call us at (402) 764-7681. Also check out the online tutorials available in the archives of this page.

The students will soon be receiving their laptops, remember that the Stromsburg Public Library is a wifi hotspot 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There’s never a reason for your student to be without internet access.

Don’t have a printer? You can print, fax, and scan documents at the Stromsburg Public Library. We do not have wireless printing available at this time so make sure you email the document to yourself or make it accessible somehow from the library’s computers. Copies are 20 cents a page plus tax.

Stromsburg Public Library is a great source of AR books to help students achieve reading goals this school year. In addition to our physical collection, you can check out ebooks and audio books from our on-line library system by clicking here. All you need is your library card number to get started. Don’t know your library card number? Call the library at (402) 764-7681 and Diana or Monica will be able to help you.

The library also subscribes to a number of databases that are available on the NebraskAccess site. To sign in all you need is a Nebraska driver’s licence number or a password that is available at the library. These databases take you directly to the source of reliable information for research papers, speeches and so much more. They go way beyond your typical Google search.

For all your display needs the Stromsburg Public Library has an Accu-cut die machine. Use our machine to put that professional touch on any school project. The library may borrow additional dies from the Northeast Library System. Just let us know a day or two in advance. To see a complete listing of their collection see their Lending Library page here.

The Stromsburg Public Library wants every student at our area schools to have a successful year, if we can be of any help, just let us know!
