We have new artwork hanging in the library courtesy of Kathy Nelson and the Friends of the Stromsburg Public Library.
The poster was donated by Kathy Nelson in 2011 after she was the featured speaker at the unveiling of the original mural that hangs in the Multicultural Center at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
Twelve students from the 2011 Advanced Painting Class at UNL were tasked with researching the life of George Flippin and then creating two separate canvas’s that they thought represented an aspect of Flippin’s life. A caveat though, they needed to create the canvas’s in such a way as to represent Flippin when put together. The original mural stands 4′ x 6′. More information about the mural can be found here.
In anticipation of the upcoming publication of Nelson’s book, “More Than Football: George Flippin’s Stromsburg Years” the Friends of the Stromsburg Public Library wanted to recognize both Kathy Nelson and George Flippin by making sure the poster became a part of the library and took it to be framed.
Kathy Nelson worked as Assistant Librarian of the Stromsburg Public Library from 2003-2010. It was during this time that she became aware of George Flippin’s story and began to further her research about him.
