The Central Plains Library System celebrated our first annual Week of Weeding from March 22-28. We had sixteen libraries that reported weeding including public, school, and academic libraries. Together they weeded more than 6,500 items.
Some had specific reasons for weeding such as “remodeling the entire flow of the library” and making space for a section of series books. Others had unused items to weed including books not checked out since 1986 and books on tape. One librarian stated, “I hated to see them go…” but another was upbeat about the change saying “Now people can see at a glance what we have.” All participants recognized that weeding is a necessary part of collection management.
A random drawing from all the participants was held at the Hastings System Office on March 31. CPLS President Jody Crocker pulled the winner’s name out of the basket. The winner of the Kindle eReader is Betty Warnke, from the Callaway School Library.
Congratulations to all who participated in this year’s Week of Weeding!
