Butler Memorial Library applied for ARPA funds in 2021. We were awarded $4,026.00 to be used for a list of eligible projects that would support the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) goals. We chose to focus on two library needs. One, we have tablets for kids that are outdated and are either broken or will not update any longer. Two, our front desk is also outdated and has required many repairs.
We have use these ARPA funds to purchase new 9th generation IPads for the kids! They are all set up with a child account and have screen time set up to protect them. We have also purchased new cases in bright colors. Kids can check these iPads out by asking the library staff if they may check one out, filling out their name and date on a sign in sheet and unplugging the iPad from the charging station. Kids can take the iPads anywhere they want inside the library. When they check the iPads back in, kids are asked to wipe the iPads down with a sanitizing wipe and plug them back in. We started this process of checking out iPads for kids in 2020 and the kids have enjoyed the freedom of taking the iPads to different chairs around the library.
We also purchased a new desktop computer for the front desk. This desktop is an all-in-one computer with a simple design that works perfectly for our front desk. It allows us to continue to check library material in and out easily.
These ARPA funds were granted to provide for enhanced services over and above those provided through local funding. We are grateful to the Nebraska Library Commission and the Institute of Museum and Library Services for this one time opportunity to provide some needed updates for our library.
This project is supported in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by the Nebraska Library Commission.
