The Stromsburg Public Library will be closed, Wednesday, November 11, 2015 in honor of Veteran’s Day.

We will reopen Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 10 am

 

Research has shown that reading aloud to your child every day is vitally important to their reading readiness and success in school. Fifteen minutes each day is all it takes to help your children achieve their goals.

Bring your children to the Stromsburg Public Library Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday this week as we participate in Nebraska’s Read-Aloud month. We are reading out loud to the children for 15 minutes from the book, “Francine Poulet Meets the Ghost Racoon” by Kate DiCamillo.  This is a chapter book, so younger children may not be as interested as those who are already in school or preschool, but all are welcome to attend!

Thanks to the generous donations of those in our community we have shipped 208 books to over 15 different military families, soldiers and VA centers.

Due to changes in our system, and the checks that are set-up in the OverDrive system, Stromsburg Public Library patrons are now required to use their complete 14-digit bar code number that is on their library card at sign-in. If your card does not have a 14-digit number, please call us and we will help you with that.

The good news is you don’t have to memorize a 14-digit number, once you sign in using the number, make sure to check the box that says, “Remember me on this device”. Unfortunately, you will have to do this on each device you use OverDrive on.

Also, at this time you may not have access to all of your lists and holds. The computer department at the Nebraska Library Commission and at OverDrive are working on meshing the accounts as they match log-in numbers. We request your patience as we go through this transition.

We had our first successful day of summer reading! If you missed it, don’t worry, there are still four more weeks!

Those entering Kindergarten through 2nd grade in the fall meet at 9 am and those going into 3rd – 5th grade meet at 10:30 am. 

On July 29 everyone will meet together at 10 am for prizes and special appearances by some local heroes!

Tonight, June 23, we will be holding our last “Lawn Chairs and Lemonade” program. Kirby’s School of Dance from Osceola will be performing. Please come out and cheer on these great dancers! Program begins at 6:30 pm.

We have enough books for a shipment so I requested 2 addresses. We received addresses and requests for two families! Both live on military bases overseas. Below are their requested genres, notice they are looking for children’s books and romance titles! We have quite a few Mystery books as well as Suspense/Thrillers and Action/Adventure so I think we are good there. These addresses expire on the 16th so we need to get the packages sent off next week. Let’s serve these families!

Every year when the summer reading materials come it’s a debate on whether we should do anything for the adults or not. There are materials and program ideas and even a separate theme for the adults, so should we or should we not? We’ve tried some different approaches to adult summer reading, but frankly, everyone is so busy they aren’t very successful.

This year we are going to follow the adult summer reading theme and “Escape the Ordinary”! Instead of a reading program focused on prizes and how many adults read and check out materials, we are going to give to those that give everything for us; our servicemen and women.

The overall theme for summer reading this year is “Every Hero has a Story” and while it’s true that everyone has a story to tell, our servicemen and women don’t always have stories to read. Operation Paperback was born in 1999 and has shipped books overseas to our military bases as well as veteran’s hospitals, USO centers and military families.

I have signed up as a volunteer for this organization with the hope that the library, working with Stromsburg and the surrounding community, can send at least one shipment of books.

What I need from you:

-gently used, like new, paperback books-NO romance novels

-donations to cover the cost of shipping-$.25 per book donated is recommended or $7 to cover a box. 

-volunteers to pack and ship the paperbacks

We are going to try to keep this project limited to June only so we can focus on the elementary summer reading in July so get your donations in early!
