Friends of the Stromsburg Library
The Friends of the Stromsburg Public Library’s mission is to support our library and library staff by providing assistance and financial support for programs and special projects.
The Friends met in June 2016 to reorganize. Kathy Nelson, Diana Johnson, Kay Kronberg and Bob Greenwall make up the leadership team. All minutes and requests will be e-mailed to members.
The Friends have provided the matching funds for the Libri Grant to purchase children’s books. They purchased “Play-a-Ways,” self-contained audio book players for checkout. The Friends paid the speaker’s fee for Megan Smolenyak, author of “Who Do You Think You Are: The essential Guide to Tracing Your Family History” on which the television series is based. They provided the funds for the library to participate in Nebraska Overdrive which allows library card holders to download e-books to their Kindle, Nook or other e-book reader or MP3 audio device.
Now we are seeking to help with monthly programs by providing assistance, snacks, and materials. The Friends provided the food for the summer reading finale “tail-gate party” on August 2, 2016.
The next big project we are working on for 2016 is the purchase of an archival display case. Kathy Nelson is donating all her research materials and memorabilia on Dr. George Flippin to the library for display and storage. We are working with Cornhusker Industries to make the 72” x 84” case. The upper part is a glassed case with space to display pictures and memorabilia. The lower section will have 2 open shelves and 4 file drawers. There will be enough space in the file drawers for family genealogy folders available for research. The first plans came back with an estimate of $1,800 but will cost a bit more due to changes we requested. $1,100 has already been donated toward the project. We will be doing a membership drive in January. Memberships are $15 silver, $25 bronze, $50 gold and $100 diamond. These monies provide craft materials, snacks, summer reading prizes, and program materials. Membership dues are welcome any time.
