The Czech Heritage Room demonstrates the community’s interest in preserving their ancestors’ memories, language and customs. The room holds Czech kroj calendars and embroidery patterns, and textile and costume books that are helpful in designing or researching the origins of a costume. A Moravian costume is displayed on a female mannequin. A woman’s wool jacket from the Chod region is also on display. Old maps of Czechoslovakia lining the walls are helpful in finding ancestral villages.
Other collections and items in this room are Czech record albums, glassware, dolls, stamps, bobbin lace and crocheted appliqués, crocheted baby bonnets, and painted Easter eggs. The shelves are filled with books written in Czech as well as English. A collection of children’s picture books are written in Czech with beautiful color illustrations.
Through the years the library has been host to visitors from numerous states and foreign countries. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Doane College in Crete, Nebraska have arranged many tours for people interested in the Czech culture.
