It’s Gonna Be May

Hello, all! It has finally warmed up and we’ve been able to enjoy the sunshine! Just in time for school to be out, too!

This Saturday, May 18th, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, is our Start-of-Summer Dr. Seuss-themed party!! We’ll have good food, games, crafts, and goodie bags for all who attend! We’ll be reading a lot, too, of course. We hope to see you there!!

We have already started receiving donations for Summer Reading!! Thank you Spartan/Smeal, Hunke Manufacturing LLC, Leona’s Place, Scribner Bank, Joe and Connie Kaup, Dairy Queen, Raising Cane’s, and Subway sooooo much for your donations!! We’re going to have an AMAZING program this year because of them!! Once again, if you have stuff around the house that you don’t use (such as toilet paper tubes, loose beads, little rocks and shells, little boxes, stickers, paperclips, clean pop bottles to cut in half, clean popsicle sticks, toothpicks, cotton balls, foil, craft corks, small washers, nuts, screws, springs, etc, discarded/broken jewelryanything you can think of!) that could be used to make little robots, alien houses, spaceships, and other assorted crafts that we will be doing, please consider bringing it all to the library instead of throwing it away! We will be using the materials for this summer and for future events! Or if you want to come volunteer your time and help us out during the programs, talk to the kids about space and STEAM, donate snacks and/or items; anything you can think of would be a huge help to us. Thank you again!

This year, our Summer Reading Program will be a little bit different. Since the first Thursday in July is Independence Day, we have decided to have our programs on Tuesdays instead. So the 2nd, 9th, 16th, and the 23rd will be our program days (1:00 pm – 3:30 pm), and the 30th (time to be determined), will be our end-of-program pizza party! We will be having a special guest providing entertainment during the party this year!! I can’t wait! We’re going to be learning so much about space and STEAM, and have lots of fun while doing so! I’ve got bunches of ideas; all I’ve got to do is narrow them down and construct the programs around them. We’re going to have a blast!

Our clubs are still going well, but I’ve lost the regulars who always came to Writing Club. Hopefully that will pick back up again. Last month, Chess Club has six attendees, Writing Club had none, the first Gym Day had three, and Board Game Night had eight. This month, Chess Club had six attendees, Writing Club once again had none, and today’s Gym Day had four kids coming out to play. I have a feeling that Board Game Night will end up being the top club soon (depending on next week’s numbers), with Chess Club close behind. And as summer starts, hopefully Gym Day will get more popular. I’m still holding out hope for Writing Club, though!!

I hope to have more info about the Summer Reading Programs next month but that’s all from me for now. Have a great start to your summer and we hope to see you here soon at your Snyder Public Library!!!

Please, No April Showers!

Hey, everyone! We’ve had some beautiful weather, haven’t we?! And some not-so beautiful weather. Mother Nature can’t seem to make up her mind from one day to the next! Hopefully it’ll be nothing but clear skies and sunshine here soon!

Our weekly Wednesday clubs are doing great! In March, we had SEVEN at Chess, two at Writing, TEN at Board Game Night, and EIGHT came to the brainstorm-a-new-club/craft day. This month, we had SIX patrons come to chess, and someone finally beat me! It was a very good, very intense game, and I shook their hand afterwards. I hope that the next Chess Club will be just as entertaining and suspenseful!! We hope to start having tournaments amongst ourselves soon, and maybe someday soon we’ll have a town-wide chess tournament for anyone and everyone!

At the brainstorm/craft day, we made our own monsters/creature bags and thought up ideas for a new club, and then they voted for the ones they liked. We will now be having Gym Day! It’ll be a day to just play in the auditorium, whether it be games or sports or just running about, and our first one is THIS Wednesday, April 17th. We may vote on what to do and/or play some games as a group. Hopefully it all goes well!

Next month, on May 18th, we will finally be having our Dr. Seuss party! It will be to celebrate the Start of Summer/End of School instead of his birthday, and will no longer be a pajama party, since it’ll be later on in the year. It will still be on a Saturday (the 18th), from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm, in the Snyder Auditorium. We will be having multiple story times, games, crafts, and snacks for everybody to enjoy! There will also be goodie bags for the kids! And I am going to try making green deviled eggs for Green Eggs and Ham! Wish me luck!

It’ll be time to start prepping for the Summer Reading Program sooner than we think! This summer’s theme is space, with the motto being ‘A Universe of Stories.’ We’re going to be learning all about space: the space station, the planets, the stars, aliens and robots, spacecraft, and so much more! We’ll also be doing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) crafts and experiments! It’s going to be so much fun!! I’ll be sending out letters asking for donations, planning out the programs, picking out the books, buying supplies, and all kinds of stuff within the next month!

In the meantime, I have a similar request of our patrons and community that I had last year: if you have stuff around the house that you don’t use (such as toilet paper tubes, loose beads, little rocks and shells, little boxes, stickers, paperclips, clean popsicle sticks, toothpicks, cotton balls, foil, craft corks, small washers, nuts, screws, springs, etc, discarded/broken jewelry, anything you can think of!) that could be used to make little robots, alien houses, spaceships, and other assorted crafts that we will be doing, please consider bringing it all to the library instead of throwing it away! We will be using the materials for this summer and for future events!

Thank you so much!!

This is Liz the Librarian, signing off.

Nebraska Strong <3

Hello, everyone! I am so sorry that I am only just now making a blog post for March. As you all know, it’s been one heck of a month.

The Dr. Seuss party was postponed due to cold weather, and we have decided to wait until May to have it as a end-of-school/Spring Party instead. I will post about it here and make new signs when we decide on a new date, but we are thinking about having it the first Saturday after the last day of school.

Our Young Adult Book Group has disbanded, I’m afraid. We will be having a brainstorming session (for new club ideas) tomorrow during club time, during which we will be doing crafts since it is Youth Art Month. Everyone is welcome! We had six people at Chess Club, six at Writing Club (yay!), and five at Board Game Night in February. This month, we had seven come to Chess Club and only two come to Writing Club, but we had a lot of fun at that one with the prompt we chose. We are hoping to come up with ideas for a new (or recurring) club tomorrow while we have some fun crafting, and then next week will be Board Game Night!

Devastation has struck our beautiful state these last couple of weeks, with record-breaking floods in the east and snowfalls in the west. The Snyder Auditorium was home to the North Bend nursing home, and the ballroom was home to the rest of North Bend’s citizens. Because of this, I opened up the library for the residents and staff to use, and we were not open to the public on the 17th. Everyone has cleared out now and we are open today, because I felt that local patrons and kids needed some semblance of normalcy before returning to school tomorrow.

I am so proud of the Snyder community for stepping up and taking on a whole other town and helping out as much as humanly possible during this disaster. We have a long way to go, but it’s great to know that we live in such a wonderful place and that Nebraska is able to pull together at a moment’s notice. We have resumed normal business hours and I will be available to help as much as needed. If anybody needs anything, please call the library or find me at the Snyder Mini Mart and I will do all that I can to assist you.

We are Nebraska Strong <3

Stay safe, everyone.
