May is Here!

Hey, all! Liz the Librarian here with the Snyder Public Library’s (hopefully) monthly blog!

Yay, May is finally here! It’s not cold! Let’s hope it sticks this time. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming.. on days like these, patrons like you.. should come on down to the library and check out a book or two! We’ve got plenty of books for you to choose from, with all kinds of genres and age levels to go through, and we also have lots of movies for you to look at! And if we don’t have what you’re looking for, I can order a book from another library with the InterLibrary Loan feature we offer, free of charge! You’d get it for a whole month! We also have computers for you to use, newspapers and magazines for you to read, and Wi-Fi. There’s all kinds of things for you to do at your local library, come check it out!

I’m also going to be holding my first event this month! On Mother’s Day, I will have crafts available in the library for children and their mothers/mother figures to do, and snacks for them to eat! We will also have storytime, where I’ll read books while everyone listens and works on their projects! I hope you can make it! I will be trying to do something similar for Father’s Day, as well.

I am still graciously accepting supplies and donations for this year’s Summer Reading Program, Libraries Rock! We still need stuff to make instruments with (mainly for drums), smallish rocks with at least one flat side to write on, and if you’re musically inclined and would like to come play or perform for the kids, that would be awesome! The programs will be on Thursdays in July, from 1:00pm to 3:30pm, so just let me know when you’d like to come to either talk to the kids, perform, or even volunteer and help out! I hope to have packets and sign up sheets ready here soon, but please bear with me, as I have never done a Summer Reading Program on my own before. Thank goodness I have an amazing library board and wonderful patrons to help and make everything a little easier on me!

That’s it from me for now. Thank you for everything you do, because without you, libraries would not exist! I hope to see you at our events, programs, or just inside the library sometime!

Have an amazing month!!!

Hello There!

I am so excited to be here! My name is Elizabeth Hittle (but you can call me Liz) and I am your new director here at the Snyder Public Library! I have been in the librarian field for about six years now, but this is the first time I’ve ever been a director, so I may be a bit clumsy for the first few months. Just bear with me, and I’m sure I’ll have it all figured out in no time! I hope to start up some weekly programming for adults and kids this fall, so if you have any ideas, please let me know.

As you all know, the Summer Reading Program is in July, and will most likely be every Thursday of the month, like last year. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock!”, and all about music. I’m working on ideas and plans right now, but in the meantime, I need your help! If you could donate your empty Pringles cans, Kleenex boxes, cereal boxes, and coffee/oatmeal containers, that would be awesome! We also will need old rice or noodles (to make noise with!), long and medium-length rubber bands, old drumsticks (or things to be used as drumsticks), and small rocks with at least one flat side (to write on – I’ll expand on that in a future post). Anything you can think of that we could make an instrument with is welcome and appreciated! Thank you so much!

I know I have some pretty big shoes to fill – Shelley is an amazing person and a wonderful director. She has trained me in everything I need to know to be here, and has offered to help me as much as she can. Thank goodness! She took the library and made it into what it is today; a serene and cool place to be, full of the latest and greatest books. We will miss her dearly! Thank you, Shelley, for all that you have done!

I hope to make her and all of you proud, and will do my best each and every day that I am here. Thank you so much for letting me be your library director! Have a great day!

Spring?

With the warm weather we’ve been having I’m surprised the daffodils and crocus haven’t started poking their heads up yet. I’ve lived here long enough to know these temps won’t last very long, but I hope you’ve all enjoyed it while it was here!  Now that the holidays are over, everyone seems to just settle in with seed catalogs waiting for winter to end; but spring really is just around the corner.  And with that, comes our National Read Across America Day, celebrated on and around the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss.  Seuss was born in 1904 and was a poet, writer, and cartoonist.  He wrote over 60 books, selling over 600 million copies and even helped create four movies and a Broadway musical.  His books, which are famous for rhyming, have been translated to more than 200 languages.  He actually spent almost a year writing a book to make sure it was ‘just right’ before publication.  And even though he did most of his writing over 60 years ago, there is not a library in the world that doesn’t have Dr. Seuss books because they are to this day, meaningful and educational to children. So to help celebrate his life and encourage our youngsters to read, we will be holding our annual Dr. Seuss party on Saturday 3 March.  Time is yet to be determined, but rest assured it will be an event you and your children won’t want to miss!  I’ll keep you posted on the time, and look for the flyers we’ll be putting up around town!  I hope you all stay warm and healthy – and drop by for a good book or two to get you through these long winter nights.  We’ll see you soon, right here, at your Snyder Library!
