Christmas Vacation at the Library

We at the Stromsburg Public Library recognize that parents sometimes need a little help with students home for the holidays. Whether it’s a safe place for them to be while parents work, or just help keeping the children occupied when they are used to their days being scheduled. We have planned a variety of activities for the students to enjoy during the  Christmas break, we hope you and your children will take advantage of all the library has to offer.

The library will be closed December 25, 2014 and January 1, 2015.

Book Launch for “More Than Football: George Flippin’s Stromsburg Years”

Over 90 people attended Kathy Nelson’s book signing on Saturday.  It was exciting to have Mike Babcock, editor of Hail Varsity in attendance as well as author Rick Wallace. We were also pleasantly surprised to have a woman in attendance who was delivered by Dr. George Flippin in 1926! If you are interested in purchasing copies of Kathy’s book, More Than Football: George Flippin’s Stromsburg Years, please contact her at home.

Below are a few pictures from the day.

Patrons wait to have their book signed by Kathy.

Silent Auction at the Library

The needs and requirements of technology are constantly changing, due to this phenomenon, equipment becomes obsolete very quickly. The library has accumulated a large assortment of outdated equipment in the basement over the years that needs to be dealt with. We are giving the public the opportunity to purchase some of this equipment through a silent auction. The auction began on September 15 and will run through the 29th. Bids will close on the 29th and all purchases need to be picked up by 8:00 pm on the 30th. Those items not picked up will sold to the next highest bidder or recycled. All items are sold as is. Two of the computers will need operating systems installed as the plan is to wipe them to protect information. Items may be viewed at the library during normal operating hours or pictures are available at the City office. Bid sheets may be found on the reference table in the library. Bidders must be 18 years of age or older.

Reminder, we will hold a Brown Bag lunch on Friday, September 19, 2014. Laura McDougall from the Four Corners Health Department will be here to talk about emergency preparedness. Laura has been working closely with the residents of Beaver Crossing in the aftermath of the tornado that hit their town earlier this year and will share tips and ideas on how to be prepared for any emergency. Have a suggestion or idea for future Brown Bag Lunches or programs? Leave us a suggestion in the suggestion box, or talk with one of the librarians.

New books this week include “The Inn at Eagle Hill” series by Suzanne Woods Fisher, “Eisenhower” by Paul Johnson, the new Jack Reacher novel by Lee Child, “The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics” by Daniel James Brown, “Raging Heat” by Richard Castle, “The River” by Beverly Lewis, “Edge of Eternity” by Ken Follett and “Child of Mine” by David and Beverly Lewis.

Upcoming Events

September is National Preparedness Month and we want to make sure everyone in our community is ready for any emergency or disaster. Join us Friday, September 19, 2014 at noon for a Brown Bag Lunch about emergency preparedness. Laura McDougall from the Four Corners Health Department will be here to share little known facts about emergencies and what to have in an emergency kit. Did you know that text messages have a better chance of getting through during an emergency than a phone call? Do you take a charger with you to the basement in case you spend an extended amount of time waiting out a storm? Laura will cover these tips and many more.

September lapsit for 1-4 year olds will be held on the 18th at 10:30 a.m. Any child ages 1-4 years old are welcome when accompanied by an adult. We will be focusing on the language of movement and how our bodies move, perfect for that active toddler!

We are open to suggestions! We now have a suggestion box located on the large reference table in the computer area at the library. There are cards available for book suggestions and comments or suggestions about anything the library is doing. Please let us know what we can do to better serve you!
