Because I read book 2, Force of Nature, first, I was already invested in the character of Aaron Falk and wanted to know what happened in his past. This book did not disappoint. The current crime is investigated by Aaron and the local law enforcement while vignettes from the past are mixed in. You do eventually find out what happened with Ellie and it’s not what you think at all.
