Just a note – I’m encouraging all patrons to not linger in the library. Come, get your materials and continue on. We love you all, but minimal social interactions are being encouraged. ❤️

Did you know you can create a bookbag in our Online Catalog and we can have it ready for you? To log into our Online Catalog, your library card number is your username and your password is your last name, all lower case. This can help in shortening visits. We will check the holds and process them each morning at 10 am.

A Post from the Director:
This is the information for the library at this time. Keep in mind that this is an ever changing situation and things may change quickly. This post will be pinned at the top of our page and noted when there are updates.

As of now, the library has no plans to close. We are open our regular hours Monday – Saturday.

If you do not wish to come into the library but have materials at home there are options available to you. You can call the library 402-764-7681 to renew books and other materials. Also, feel free to drop off items in the drop box.

Keep in mind we have online materials available at nebraska.lib.overdrive.com or through the Libby and OverDrive app.

Donations are a great way for libraries to add to their collection without using budget funds for new books. The Stromsburg Public Library gladly accepts donations from the public, but before you donate, please consider the following. Per our policy do not accept reference materials or textbooks that are older than 5 years and books must be in like new condition.

To keep our library collection current and useful we apply the principle of weeding on a regular basis. We pay particular attention to the condition of the book when weeding. Does it smell? Are there signs of wear? Are the pages yellowed or discolored in any way? We also look at the content of the book. Is it a book that will interest patrons in our community?  Is it still relevant and reliable?

We ask that you also consider these questions before you decide to donate books or other materials to the library. The condition of the book plays mightily into whether someone will even take the book off the shelf, let alone check it out and take it to their home. If a book does not pass inspection, it is okay to throw a book away. If you don’t want it in your home, chances are, no one else does either. If it is a fabulous book that you picked up on vacation or purchased for yourself and you think others would like it, please don’t hesitate to call and ask if we would like it for the collection. A quick call to confirm that we have the time and space to take donations is always appreciated.

Other options for book donations include your local church or the Living Water Rescue Mission in York. Check with these organizations to see what their donation policy might be.

We are open throughout these nasty winter days. There are very few days that the library closes due to weather, if ever. We will only close if the weather poses a danger to the staff in their drive home.

If you are able to use steps, parking on the south side of the building at the bottom of the steps protects you from the north wind and puts you closer to the door.

You can always call the library to renew a book. Do not endanger yourself for renewals. You can also renew books and put books on hold from the library’s online catalog.

Reminder: Our beautiful front sidewalk is wide to be handicap accessible, but not wide enough for cars and is not meant to be a driveway. We do have handicap accessibility all around the library.

The library will be closed November 27th and 28th (Thursday and Friday) in observance of Thanksgiving.

Stromsburg Public Library

As the new director of the library, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to thank the community and our patrons for all their support and encouragement during this transition. It’s been wonderful to hear everyone’s kind words, so thank you.

For those that don’t know me, my name is Monica Tidyman, I am married and have three boys. We have lived in Stromsburg 12 years. Philip works at Strobel Manufacturing in Clarks, NE as a trans load trailer technician and our boys are; Daniel, a senior at Cross County schools, Aaron, a freshman and Benjamin, a 7^th grader.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Nebraska at Omaha where I completed my Bachelor’s degree in General Studies with a Library Science concentration. I have minor concentrations in Public Administration and Religious studies.

I have worked at the Stromsburg Public Library as an Assistant for the past year and a half. Previously, I have directed the summer reading program and worked as an intern at the library. I have also worked at Cross County schools as a para in the library and in the elementary school.

Reading is a passion for me and I love to share that passion with others. It gives me great satisfaction to connect people with the perfect book and see the excitement in their eyes when they have finished a wonderful read.

I have enjoyed getting to know our patrons over the past months and look forward to continuing and expanding our relationship.

April 13-19 is set aside as National Library Week. I would invite everyone to stop by the library during the week to take in one of the activities. We will be having a Book Sale Blow-Out in the meeting room all week with many bargains available. Our regularly scheduled lapsit time for 1-4 year olds will be held on Tuesday, the 15^th. All participants will have a chance to win a “Wee Read” bag full of goodies. On Wednesday, the Friends of the Library will be hosting an Open House reception from 4 pm until 6 pm. Stop by after work for refreshments and learn more about the library and the Friends group. We will also hold a drawing for a book every quarter hour during the Open House.

“Dig Into History” is our theme for the Teen Summer Reading Program this month. On June 11, teens played a rousing game of boys vs girls Historical Jeopardy with the boys taking home the prize.

For our book club selection we are reading “Belle Boy: A Sister in the Rebel Ranks” by Anne Fuller. When her adored older brother, Johnny, goes missing in action at the Battle of Gettysburg, Samantha Anne Davis becomes Sam Davis and joins the Confederate Army in hopes of finding out what has become of Johnny. Will she find him before someone discovers her secret?
