Rockets to the Rescue

Have you every wondered what it would be like to be an aerospace engineer? Professional engineers frequently encounter design challenges when developing, manufacturing and testing aerospace products. They must be creative and use their imaginations to best solve problems. During our final activity time, the kids designed, built and launched a rocket to test for height and distance. The pictures show the kids testing their rocket creations.

Magic Show to Close out Summer Reading Program

Summer Reading is winding down. Our last story time will be Wednesday, July 10, and the last activity time will be Thursday, July 11. Our Summer Reading Challenge will also end on July 11. On July 12, we will culminate our summer reading with a magic show. The “Out of this World” magic show featuring Jeff Quinn will be held at the Community Center at 2:00. The public is invited to attend. The show runs about 40 minutes and contains lots of audience participation, family-friendly humor and amazing magic. He always builds his Summer Reading Program show around the theme, so this year it’s going to be all about outer space. There will be tricks with planets, astronauts, rockets…and even an appearance by a friendly visitor from another planet. It’s going to be a lot of fun!

Penguinaut

Story time children show off their astronaut helmets. They are ready to blast off on their own adventure!

When was your last big adventure? Orville, a penguin, lives at the zoo. He is surrounded by animal pals who go on exciting adventures. A hang gliding rhino! A deep-sea diving giraffe! One day he concocts an adventure all his own: build a spaceship and fly to the moon all by himself. Can one tiny penguin get there alone?

Activity Time

The kids have really enjoyed having Travis Rudloff from the Antelope County Extension Office lead our Summer Reading Activity Time. He has done a variety of activities from building space stations, making moon sand and slime, to talking about the different types of bees and pollination. We have enjoyed having Travis be a part of our summer reading program. He made each session fun as well as educational. We hope Travis will join us again next year. We will not have Activity Time on Thursday, July 4, but will finish out on July 11.

Aliens Invade the Library!

Is there Life on Mars? This week in summer reading the children listened to the story, Life on Mars by Jon Agee. A young astronaut is sure there is life to be found on Mars. He sets off on a mission, determined to prove the naysayers wrong. But when he arrives with a package of cupcakes as a gift, he sees nothing but a nearly barren planet. Finally, he spies a single flower and packs it away to take back to Earth as proof that there is life on Mars. But as he settles in for the journey home, he opens his cupcakes—only to discover that someone has eaten them all! Unbeknownst to the little explorer, a Martian has been wandering through the illustrations the whole time—and he got himself a delicious snack along the way. Unbeknownst to us, story time was also invaded by aliens. Pictured are the 25 aliens that landed at the library.
